Joe has posted about how to fit an electronic (Magnetron) ignition to a breaker-point (that is, pre-1982) Briggs & Stratton engine, but I haven't seen a post on converting a 2 stroke Victa. However, Joe is the man - I'm sure he'll set one or both of us straight.

Hi Mower man this is [Linked Image] part that you can fit to your engine to replace the points and condenser. cheers2

Cheers Bruce, I was about to say you could rov a powertorque of its ignition module and wire it to the full crank coil, I have never tried it myself yet though CHeers wink

It sounds a bit tricky: aren't the whole engine layouts different for full-crank and Powertorque engines? A working description of how to make the conversion, with pictures, might interest quite a few members.

Grumpy,

It is very easy to install just two wires, one connects to the points wire and the other to earth. The module comes with directions. I will see if I can scan it and upload to the forum later. cheers2

Thanks Bruce, I just didn't expect there would be mounting holes for the module in exactly the right place to get the correct ignition timing.

I dont think the igniton modules victa use, utilise the crank position, maybe they measure the voltage buildup in the coil via the points wire.

I am most definately going to try this conversion on an old 160, there is plenty of room under the flywheel with the points removed to hide the module and keep it original.

So they keep the old coil? I guess that would at least approximately tell them when the crankshaft is in firing position. Then you could strap the electronic module on anywhere you wanted.

Yeah thats what I was thinking Grumpy, on a powertorque the ignition module is well away from the flywheel, I will have to look into how it works.

You've tweaked my interest Joe, if it can be located well away from the flywheel, Maybe it could be placed somewhere away from the heat....and that may be a good thing?

I was thinking hiding it under the flywheel for originalaty purposes but I suppose you could hook it to the kill wire easily enough and hide it under the cowling...
