If you are performing a resto & need to have your steel front roller looking a little newer, try simply touching it up with an orbital sander and a wire brush. Mine came up very well, has a nice shine to it & will save you some $$ on a new one.

Hi Ross, could you please post a pic of the finished roller? It may be of interest to those restoring SB's.
What was the condition of the roller axle when you removed it?

No probs Deejay, attached before & after shots of the front roller. I have a more work to do on it & I think I can get it to come up a little better, however I think it is a considerable improvement. You are spot on (again) in your suggestion the rod is worn on the front roller rod. There is definite wear on the underside of the rod itself, so , I simply turned it 180 degrees, bolted it back on & the wear is now on top of the rod, not where the roller spins.
cheers Ross

A couple more before & after pics of the front roller after I touched it up with an orbital sander. Could have kept going & achieved an even better result, but ran out of time.
