Hi MacCullum, good to see that that the housing has been welded, but how do you know that the weld is all the way through? Has the allen screwed part been removed, and all surfaces inspected?

Re: your bottom blade, the engineer that sharpens your reel will manufacture one for you....he will most probably have one in his stock..(as well as the screws to suit) and because you are having your reel assy sharpened there, you will get it at a better price. To develop a good relationship with your engineer is very important, if you wish to maintain a reel mower in tip-top condition through-out its mowing life.

Thank You Deejay, I checked the weld and it does seem to be right through. The Allen pivot screw unscrews quite easily, and the hole in which it fits is now a freshly drilled hole in what appears to be solid aluminium.
I took the cutting unit to the sharpeners, and they confirmed that they can replace the bottom blade as you said. These are the people who sharpen Toro greens mowers and fairway mowers, and whose machine I mentioned above. The machine sharpens each blade separately, running along it lengthwise. It must be very accurate, as it sharpens only half the thickness of the blade in order to conserve metal. They sharpened the three gangs of my Toro mower (just backlapping), and those gangs cut newspaper beautifully now.
I will see if I can make a video of the process when my Scott Bonnar is being done.

Sorry All, My last post was a bum steer! Ade Turf Equipment's sharpening machine turns the reel and sharpens it with the usual flat faced spinning grinding wheel moving along just as in the video on this forum. They do mount the whole mower on this machine, but the reel is aligned with respect to the axle, and I am assured that the whole thing keeps this alignment very accurately. Presumably this would be OK provided that the bearings were OK.
The people who welded the cutter bearing housing volunteered, when I was picking it up, that they could weld new blades in place if necessary. I took this with a grain of salt, but this morning I saw Bruce's post (#18301 of 30/7//10) in which he confirms that these blades can be replaced this way. I am still wondering what a replacement reel for a Scott Bonnar 65 would be likely to cost. What are the pros and cons???

It's great to have you on board.We all like to learn new things and tinker here.
Thank you for posting this info for us, I for one, have never seen a complete mower in the sharpening machine.....I do agree that a lot of the accuracy of the grind would depend on the serviceability of the cylinder reel's bearings...and frame alignment, for that matter.
