The Victa Corsair 2 stroke is having a problem starting. When the starting rope is pulled it sometimes makes a clunking sound but on some pulls it doesn't make any sounds however it still won't start. I had noticed that the washer next to the locknut holding the blade plate had broken in half and so I replaced it with another one from another Victa machine. Still makes a clunking sound when you pull the rope but I cannot get it to start. Any suggestions?

first ide check that the pull start and the cup that it grips into are secure and intact. check the coil gap because its possible the coil is clunking against the the flywheel, which would also stop the unit from starting because there would be no spark. often the blades fly around and make noises but considering it wont start check the obvious things first. from memory the older corsair's were the original full crank victa engines?

Thanks, Jay. I'm still getting a spark so I assume that the coil gap is ok but the sound seems to be coming from around the area you mention or a bit lower.

It has Powertorque written on it. My mother had it taken to a mower repair place and they said the piston has had it.

My question is what should I purchase now to fix this lawnmower. For those that have done this job, how difficult is it?

WHip the exhaust off and have a look at the side of the piston, this can give fair indication of the condition of the motor, secondly roll it over and hold the sides of the blade disc and rock it from side to side, if there is any movement between the engine and crankshaft the beaqrings and seals need replacing.

Lastly, if you have the head off put your finger on the top of the piston and gently turn the motor back and forth by an inch or two, if you feel any time when you turn the motor back and forth where the piston dies not move there is wear in the conrod bearings.

Most times I find clunks are caused by either a blade plate that the hole in the center has flogged out, a bent chassis and the blades hit the deck or worn engine bearings.
