hi everyone
every time i dimantle a powertorque carby i have trouble getting it to idle slow enough, i have one that was idling good but had a flat spot, cleaned the carby and now it wont idle slow enough. i checked the diaphram seated properly and left the steel retainer off.some one told me once to put two brass washers under the govener body to space it out a bit more. i tried it once and it seemed to help but you shouldnt have to. i dont know whats going on, before i cleaned it out it was fine. thanks micka

Interesting reading and learning,my vc-160 does the same, why does the poppet valve make any differance in the way you put it back.we all like to learn.also i have read on here that a scored piston is no good, can,t you use wet/dry paper to smooth out the score.a lot of these simple/silly questions are not publisised in books etc...ken

Polishing the piston cannot return missing metal - it can only remove more metal to give a smooth surface. When you finish polishing, the piston no longer fits the bore. Depending how much clearance it has, it may not seal the ports properly - it will rattle around, and may not happen to be close to the port's surface at the crucial time.
The short answer is, if it is really shallow scoring, you may get away with it or you may not. If the scoring has any depth, removing metal may make it work worse rather than better. Besides that, increasing the piston to bore clearance will make the piston rattle (a noise known as piston slap). So, give it a try if you want, but unless the damage is superficial and the engine still runs properly before you start, you will probably be disappointed.

as to the position of the poppet valve, depending on which letter is pointed at the spray hole where thefuel comes in from the jet can alter the tuning somewhat, generally it should be set at C

however on the original g4's they had a black poppet valve which didnt matter how it was put in.

i've got it to idle pretty good now, i ended up getting some fine paste and gave the poppet valve a light reseat, set it up on c and put it all back together and it seem pretty good.i dont know if that helped or not, i might have just missed something. i dont know why i have dramas with these things specially when there so straight forward, thanks every one micka

to be truthful i dont think there is many people who dont have trouble with these carbs unless you have either loots of bits to make one good one out of or you know enough about them. i use to have trouble gettint them back together but once i worked it out i havent had much real trouble accept the kill system which is a pain in the ass in any case.
glad to hear you got it fixed.
regards jay
