|
Hi guys new to this forum. I am just looking for lost parts from my pops old lawn mower. I would also like to purchase a full work shop manual for the engine as that it needs carby parts and gaskets. Any help for any of this information would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks Chippy17

Hi chippy 17, and a big warm welcome to the forum.  We all love to learn new things and tinker here.  We'll need some specific details of your machine. Can you give us the model number and serial number of the mower; the engine number (should be on the cowling) and if possible a photo or two. The instructions for subscribing to the Parts List and Manuals area are in the very first thread on any topic in the main forum area. Once again,

i ahve just finished working on a tvs90 as well (reconditioning the whole carby) so if you get stuck, dont be afraid to ask, everyone here is great!

Hi there the model of the engine is a TVS90 46100e it is in good shape as far as the piston and bore but it is in need of a valve job.The guides are floged as well as the valve stems mainly on the EX side.Trying to find some parts is being quite hard.The frame and all other gear is in great shap.My pop use to cleen and polish this thing after every use and drain the fuel while in storage.You talk to people that are in the trade but they are not shore or if they can get parts.This forum has had more info on this engine than the local small engine builder.

I have never had a tecumseh apart before but if they are anything like a briggs you may be out of luck on the valve guides, as on a lot of briggs engines the valves just run through the metal block. You could possibly sleeve it though.
If all else fails I could post you a tecumseh tvs90 block, it has a broken govenor (you could probably swap yours in), I have no use for it since I have removed everything such as the carby and magneto from it.

Hi there the guides are brass but the parts lists say you can get over size valve stems but nobody knows were to get 2 valves how hard can it be.

You would need contacts in the US spare parts industry to have much hope of getting Tecumseh valves with oversized stems, I think. When Tecumseh's engine factory shut down there was talk about speculators buying the last stock of spare parts so they could run up the prices.
If the valve guides are pressed in you could probably get a local workshop to turn up a pair of new ones for you. Alternatively you could just find a pair of valves from some other engine that happen to have a slightly larger stem diameter, the same head diameter, and a greater stem length, then shorten the stems and ream out your old valve guides. It would most likely be quicker and easier, though, to just send a PM to Joe Carroll.

Hi all well its been awhile but found all the parts from
1 EX Valve O/S
1 IN Valve O/S
1 Set of rings
1 full gasket kit
1 Fuel Tank
1 Muffler
1 Carby
1 complete filter kit
1 Seal kit
Total $176.00 with frieght = $215.00 AU to my door

Thanks for keeping us posted, chippy17. I'm glad you got the parts you wanted. Sounds like you will now have to ream the valve guides to the exact size of the oversized valve stems - it may be cheapest and easiest to get this done by a mechanic who has the right reamer and prior experience, because first-time attempts to use a reamer often give bad results. Whatever you do, do not attempt to use a drill-bit.
Because it is your father's old mower, I can understand that you have a sentimental attachment to it. Otherwise I think most of us would choose not to spend $215 plus, to repair an old rotary mower with a Tecumseh engine.

i have a few of these and they are great little engines. apart from leaking oil out of the breather down onto the exhaust i cant fault them. is yours an old vertical pull one and what color (being victa ide guess white id its an oldie or black if its later.
hope the recco goes well, ive done a few of them in the past and have a real good manual that features them so if you need specific help i may be able to sheed some light on it.

hi there Jay, it is a black one and just recieved all the parts, in the process of reming the guides had to buy one as mine dont go that small. Do you guy undercut your seats to get the corect contact width or is it no biggy. Thank in advance

hi there,
seeing as you have already spent a bit on parts its obvious you want a good quality job made of it. seeing as this is the case i would take it and get them cut (shouldn�t cost allot) because the original valve seats may have an uneven face especially if the guides were flogged .try a few mower shops and head rebuilders (although they may not be interested in such little jobs) to get the best price. you could lap them in your self but you wont get as good seal as a machine cut.

There is bound to be a mechanic or retired mechanic around Perth who has a set of Warren & Brown (a division of Repco in the old days) valve seat cutters - every corner garage used to have them. It is just a matter of choosing a diameter, seat angle and pilot diameter to match the new valves, from the wide assortment in the W&B set. Because your valve stems are oversize it may be necessary to turn up a pilot on a lathe, which should be a very small job. Then the actual seat cutting is a five minute job.
If the seats are severely undercut (i.e. are well below the level of the surrounding combustion chamber) this shrouds the valves, which reduces the engine's power output somewhat. A small amount of undercutting is not important for a low-performance lawnmower engine. However do not cut deeply because that would leave the valve seat inserts too thin for stability and durability.

ok so far i have reemed the guides no chattering with reemer, and valve slighty falls with its own weight lubed. I have a full set of newell cutters as i use to be in speedway and play with my own head designs.When you put your cutter sharft in it expands in the guide i will cut the seats at 46" and cut back to make seat 1.8mm width.Man i do not even have a sucker to fit this small valve but i am likeing the no heavy lifting of engine parts.

Grumpy i know that this is the first valve job this engine has had and valve heigth to deck relation is good. thanks

Re Chippy 17 #17732. Logged onto Spew.com as it sounded interesting as a source of scarce parts. The parts on view were certainly worth viewing  , but seemed to have little to do with Tecumseh! Was this a misprint, or some sort of Freudian slip?? MacCullum
