Hi.

I have an old Victa VC160 lawn mower. The engine is a 2 stroke and the label on it says it's a Mark 1, Series 70. It's fitted with what I think is an impulse starter. You wind it up and release a lever and away it goes first time.

There's also a label on the air filter cover which says that the correct Victa code for spare parts is V80.

I'm sure someone knows what this all means. Anyeay, back to the mower.

It starts and runs OK although I feel it needs to rev a bit higher as it bogs down sometimes when the grass gets longer. Also, it doesn't stop when the throttle lever is pulled back. It just ticks over very slowly.

The carby that's fitted is a Model G3 and I noticed that there was a black wire attached to the throttle linkage so I assume that this should earth out the magneto when the throttle is pulled back thus stopping the engine so I removed the carb for stripping and cleaning and to get the engine stop working.

The engine now starts and stops and idles fine.

The carby has what I assume is some sort of governor on it in the form of what can only be descibed as a plastic sail fitted on the top. There is some form of adjustment on this vane and there are some vertical line scribed on the ratchet assembly at the bottom of the vane.

Does anyone know the correct way to adjust the governor and will this help the engine to rev higher and stop bogging down.

Each notch on the plastic ring is 100RPM's so all you have to do is lift the ring slightly and turn it. If you need more detailed information just go to parts list and manuals area which has the workshop manual in it. cheers2

Thanks for that info.

I had noticed if I lift the top plastic ring and rotate it clockwise relative to the lower ring the engine revs higher on full throttle.

Are the vertical lies scribed on the plastic collars some sort of limits? At the moment the single line on the upper collar is lined up with one of the lines on the lower collar.

A silly question now. How fast should it go and how would you measure the engne speed?
