Hey all, i would like to know what i would need to do to make my own petrol chipper capable of chipping 150mm branches dia. its for a Yr 12 metal work major project. I'm designing it now. I was thinking of cutting a 20mm x 445mm dia. disc as the chipping disc with a No. of blades im not sure would is best, 2, 3 or 4. I'm also wandering what is an ideal motor to power this, i was thinking of a dual power system ie petrol and electric, i have a 5hp 3 phase motor, and a 1986 victa power torque 2 stroke engine (160cc), will these be sufficient power for it? also i want to have a shredder built in it so i don't know if a cutting disc is good enough or if i need to make a flail design attatched to the chipping disc shaft.

Hey Chris, well said, mate.
Webby the design of these things is beyond me, but it has the potential to be very dangerous if even a small mis-calculation is made....My advice is to get some expert advice in chipper construction.

In order to chip that size the engine size that you quoted would not have enough power. I will forward you a parts list that might help with the design.

Ok thanx for the advice and parts list, and yes i will be carefull and make sure it is very well built i dont rly want a 20mm thick chunk of steel hitting me or some1 else, i read that an industrial chipper disc failed, split in half and killed the operator.

Also what engine-engine size would you recommend?

I agree it is a bit hit and miss, i work with an engineer, and do allot of welding with him. When i asked him if he could make me a chipper after 30 years of engineering he refused, saying it was way to risky.
But if you really want to i would recommend looking at the deutscher model 650 parts breakdown (http://www.deutschermowers.com.au/owner%20and%20part%20manuals/Chipper%20Manual%20v1.pdf). I have one and it will chip up to 70mm branches, and turn horse poo to dust with its 6.5 ohv Briggs.
as to engine i would think about mabe a decent briggs (12 + hp) mabe even a twin.

Thanks Jay the link was very helpful, maybe my metal work teacher isnt expecting my to build something with this much power, he said aslong as its safe its ok lol. I am hesitating about the flials as this is the most dangerous part of the build
can chipper disc mulch anything, leaves and other thin matter?

Im also lucky to have a father who is a boiler maker and completed a diploma in mechanical engineering so he can also assist me

i have came up with a definate design, just a simple disc chipper, most likely a horizontal design as i only have vertical shaft motors, i'd say max chipping capacity would be 100mm if its built well as i have a small 160cc 2 stroke.

A 160cc two stroke wont be enough power. Youd have to pair up.


You can buy a pull start 6.5HP horizontal shaft motor new off eBay for under $200. You can get them with a 2:1 reduction box attached for an extra $150 or so. They had E start ones too.


I tend to agree with the others, its a bit of a dangerous game. I have a 5hp rover mulcher here that i am going to rebuild, i will take pictures of it when i strip it down and get into it, so keep an eye open.



Some thing easier, manly and a little less dangerous would be using that Victa motor and making a lawn edger. Just a thought.
