G'day,

I am trying to remove the blade holder from the crank shaft of my new project Ings edger.

So far I have removed the two grub screws, gave it heaps of penetration oil, tried to use a generic 3 hook puller but no success. The hole in the middle looks like it's treaded but non of the screws I have found in my garage seem to fit ( metric and imperial).

Does anyone has experience with those and can advice of how to remove the blade holder?

Thank you
Ron

Hi Rowa45,
Welcome here,
You will need a decent 2 jaw puller because it could be very tight, rusted on. Some times I have had up to 6 tons on some and they still won't move. The shaft will be threaded, obviously somebody has removed the bolt. I'm not sure of the thread but could be something like 3/8 UNF but that is my guess. It won't be metric or whitworth

G'day Rowa45 & Norm,

If what I circled in the below pic is a washer you may need to drill the washer so you can get a bolt into the crank,
sometimes the washer gets distorted and gets a thread on the inside of the washer because it's tight on the
crank bolt. As Norm said the common crank thread is 3/8 UNF.

You shouldn't need 6 ton to remove a crank hub as I just use a little tension on the puller then shock the hub off.

Click on this link that tells you how to remove the blade https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/120280.html

Cheers
Max

Yes Max it shouldn't take 6 tons to remove it because it hasn't been subjected to what a mower boss gets. I have had bosses that I can't move with 6 tons a if the motor is buggered and I just want the boss I just cut the shaft and put in the 12 ton press and that always gets the boss off

The crank hub comes loose a lot easier if you hammer them loose Norm, if I put a puller on and tension the puller then put one side of the boss on an old train line then hit a brass drift on top of the side of the boss it shocks the boss loose in no time.

With old 4 strokes I don't use a puller to get the boss off if I'm throwing the motor out ,I just smash the alloy off one side
then hit the boss off with the brass drift and a hammer then keep tuning the crank so you hit one side then the other side of the boss.

You don't even need CRC to remove the hubs as the hammering loosens the rusted hub.

Never had a hub not come off this way but without the hammering I've broken pullers and stripped the threads on pullers.

Hi NormK

Thanks for the advice.
You are right about the tight...,just tried a cheap 2 jaw puller, which snapped.
Have to upscale I guess.

Cheers
Ron

Thanks for the advice guys,

If I can insert a 3/8 UNF bolt, would the bolt push the blade of the crank or is this bolt just to secure the blade?

Cheers
Ron

Hi Ron,
I put a bolt in the end of the crank so the puller can push on it so you don't damage the thread with the puller. With the 2 jaw puller you tighten it up then hit the head of the puller, tighten again and hit it again and hopefully it will start moving. Heat also helps.

They are a pain to remove if you don't have the right tools or can't make the tools and if you buy the tools it can cost
more than a good $50. edger .

If you use a 2 leg puller it will need to be a strong one or you can use a Bearing Separator and Harmonic balancer puller.
