It is time to replace the engine on my old Ings Edger with the 2 stroke Briggs & Stratton motor. My problem is how to remove the Blade bar/hub from the protruding end of the crankshaft. I have removed the two grub screws from the Bar Hub but it will not budge.I have tried heating the hub, prising with a long bar, locking the engine and rotating the Blade Bar 'clockwise' & anticlockwise, with an long extension to give extra leverage, with no success
Does anyone know how it is secured to the protruding crankshaft? It does not appear to be keyed.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks Oscar2

Hi oscar2,

The crank should have a key way ,if the old motor is useless I just hit the hub off with a brass drift punch and hit one side then
turn crank 180 degrees and hit the other side and keep turning and hitting so it comes off evenly.

Another way is a bolt in the end of the crank for the puller to push against ,then use a 2 legged puller or use a bearing clamp with 2 bolts
going to the harmonic balancer remover tool.

If I use a puller or clamp and balancer remover I tension the puller up tight then put one side of the hub on an I beam or similar and then hit the other side of the hub with the brass drift punch and a big hammer and this will shock the hub off a little then you keep repeating the process tighten the puller then hammer the side of the hub .

Cheers
Max.

With these old ings and alroh 6 wheels, they often didnt use the key in the keyway - just tightened down one of the 2 setscrews into the keyway. Problem is if that keyway was ever run while it was a bit loose it works fine but rips the living hell out of the crank.

Makes it a real pain to get off

Thanks for the suggestions, I am going to make up a 1/4" flat plate puller as suggested by Maxwestern, drill and tap two holes either side of the hub (which is welded on to the blade Bar) and then with a bolt inserted through the hub/blade plate tighten down the tension bolts and then hopefully release it.
I will post the result
Thanks again
Oscar2

I made up the a 1/4" plate, drilled 8mm holes and drilled and taped the hub/blade plate, inserted bolts of various lengths into the crank hole. it released slowly pulling the hub off the crankshaft. There was no 'key' in the keyway.

I now have to install the the blade bar onto the new motor. Any ideas as I am reluctant to hammer it onto the motor crankshaft incase of damaging the crankshaft bearings etc.

Thanks
Oscar2

Hi Oscar2

Use a half round file or round file to deburr the inside of the blade hub ,some coarse sandpaper would also work but will take a little longer than a file.

The hub should slip on once deburred .

Cheers
Max.
