Does anybody have an easy fix for a decompressor that has failed on a 10.5 Briggs?

Yeah Norm, pick it up and throw it in the bin haha. I've had a gutful of the crap they are pumping out. they've known about this issue for years.

Their small engines up to 220cc are at least passable but these camshafts are just crap

Buy a motor with a thrown rod for under $10. to get a replacement camshaft or just drill the flat head and install a
Royal Enfield decompressor Norm.

You can get chainsaw decompressors for about $6. but they are most likely too small and you may need to use a few of them.

Thanks Tyler, I'm hearing you.
Yes Max, I had been thinking about the Royal Enfield decompressor, I have fitted a lot of those on Royal Enfields over the years, probably have a couple kicking around here somewhere. Problem is it is a mates Deutscher and I don't want to spend much time on it. He also started the Royal Enfield Club in Aus 25 years ago so he is well aware of Enfield decomp valves

I guess you could put a Powertorque decompressor in the spark plug hole and spin the motor over to see if that would work Norm.

Then if that works dill another hole for the decompressor.

I can see it taking a few hours though, unless you sell him another Deutsher .

Yes Max,
I had been thinking of a PT decompressor, but this motor is an OHV so it makes it a bit more difficult. Problem with this I told him not to buy it because it was too big to use on domestic lawns but he got talked into it. That was a few years ago and now he wants me to get rid of it for him and you know where that leads.

Yep that will make things difficult Norm if it's the OHV motor ,a new cam is probably a $100.and a new ohv 11.5 is $1000.

I can't see a quick cheap repair for this ,unless a cheap second hand car starter motor could be fitted with an old car battery.

It could be bodged up by drilling the spark plug base and fitting a connection with copper pipe to a remote decompressor but
that would be a hassle every time the plug needed changing.

Hi Max,
I have set this one up with a starter but it still can't crank it over. I have drill started it a couple of times and once started it runs fine. Pity but he paid too much for it in the first place but I tried to tell him. I was thinking of fitting a brass fitting in the head with a bit of copper tube out to a Victa decomp valve but everything just takes so much time these days

G'day Norm,

A car starter would be like drill starting as generally they are between 0.8 and one and a quarter HP but would still require a fair
amount of work to get it hooked up.

Yes I was thinking before the same thing with a remote Victa decompressor if you have enough room to drill the head ,but without
taking the head off it will make it more difficult to see exactly where to put the fitting and to stop swarf going into the engine

If drilling the head ,if it was me I'd set up the decompressor in the spark plug hole first just to make sure the motor turns
over with the decompressor ,that way you can work out what size fitting and hole works best.

Another way would be to drill the spark plug thread out bigger then tap a thread and install an adaptor with the fitting connected
to the adaptor then the spark plug would bolt in the centre of the adaptor.

Yes it's starting to sound like a lot of time may just be easier to buy a new cam and sell the mower straight after.

Cheers
Max.

Max,
I had the head off the other day because I wasn't sure what was going on, it is only a 5 min job to pull it off, but whatever way it goes it will end up a love job so I am running a bit low on interest in it, just want to see it gone out of the shed
