I have tried adjusting the mixture screw but that made little difference

Hi Norm,

It’s a little strange that this snipper is hard to start , even when my snipper wouldn’t rev up it started easy, makes me wonder if it’s got weak ignition ,scored in the bore ,or leaking seals.

Sometimes when I check the spark and the colour looks weak I gap the plug right down to a very small gap to see if it will start ,I had a snipper here that wouldn’t start and when I checked the spark colour it was redish yellow instead of blue white.

Might be worth connecting up a Victa module.

Hi Max,
I put the original carby back on but it is exactly the same as it was originally. Puff of starter fluid and it fires but that is all it will do. Something must be wrong with the new Chinese carby but where do you start and how much time do you waste on this stuff. I am over wasting time working on this snipper stuff just go round in circles doing your head.

Yes not worth the time to fix as a new snipper is cheap enough these days ,but it’s interesting to see what went wrong with old power equipment .

Just annoying when the motor is in good condition and runs well, just the carby is the issue

G'day Norm,

I've got my old 3 Stihl snippers running now ,2 I had to put Victa modules on and one the carby wouldn't pump fuel up from the
tank so I just changed the carby and runs well now but I haven't connected a throttle or air cleaner yet.

I didn't have to make anything up to bolt the carby on, just used a carby mount from an old trimmer and I think it's a
old mcculloch line trimmer carby.

Occasionally when I buy a part cheap from China it doesn't work but usually I can take parts out of the new item and use them to rebuild
the old item and I have a working item again , it's interesting to see the faults with the new items sometimes as they are clearly non
working factory seconds that should have ended up in the bin.

Hi Max,
I haven't been back to work on it but I have had a thought. On the top of the fuel tank is a piece of fine copper tube the pick up fuel line runs through then it goes back to plastic up to the carby. I thought this was factory but it may not be and is this possibly the cause of the fuel starving requiring the choke to be on?

Hi Norm,

The copper fuel line is standard , but. all the ones I had were leaking fuel from the pipe and the tank grommet so
I just replaced the grommet and used a fuel hose thus getting rid of the copper line.

The black hoses sometimes after decades can melt cloging fuel lines and is why I mentioned before to just
Start the trimmer with a fuel hose from the carby with the other end in a cup of fuel ,that will tell you if the original copper line is restricted.
