Hi Guys I need a little help with this one, A friend has brought me a Stihl 010AV saw which they can't get started. It had me baffled for a while until I checked the compression (less then 50psi)
I have pulled the head off and as I suspected the piston has suffered an impact and the ring is seized.
But before I start trying to find a piston, I need a little assistance with what I would call the big end bearing. The bearing that connects the crank shaft to the con rod.
When I moved the con rod all the needles feel out. What I was wondering is was it manufactured like that, or should it be as I would have expected with two caged shells holding the needles in place.
I suppose I could find some sticky grease and reassemble if I am sure I have all the needles but I am a little skeptical that it would be right. There is no trace of a bearing shell but possibly that is what has scoured the piston on the way out.
Has any come accross an assembly like this before or is it just really busted.

It has been straight fueled. Some big ends are assembled that way, put it back with grease to hold the needles in place. Bore will also be scored, you might be able to save it with a hone, but the piston has taken a beating.

I am not sure if I am going to continue with this one, it is a little dependent upon finding a piston and ring. I could not see any obvious damage in the cylinder but that could be with the benefit of cataracts. I will have a closer look before investing further and keep you posted.

Sounds like a good idea as I had several parts that I needed this year to be NLA but wasn't told they were until after they were on order for 4 months. Making hard to do repairs when there is no parts.

I got an aftermarket piston and rings for it for $52.00 here https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/234632240327. The old piston had 1 ring new one has 2, I don't know if that would make any difference, but the saw seems to run quite well and has plenty of power. It was surprisingly easy to get the pin bearings in the first time but as I only seem to learn by doing things wrong, I put the piston in backwards and dropped a couple of pin bearings getting it out and back in. A little harder getting the pin bearings in with the piston in the way and the grease I used wearing a little thin but kept me entertained for a while, could have used the special clamp mentioned in the instructions which AVB supplied.
Another tip for amateurs, if your fixing up an old saw that has had a little abuse and not been run for a few years it would be a good idea to clean the fuel tank before starting it. In this case it ran well until I got to the tree then it quit, and would not restart, a little embarrassing as I had an audience. The fuel filter was completely blocked and allowed some stuff to get through to the carburetor. Fortunately it responded to a bit of carby cleaner in the jets and I was able to prune the tree, after the audience had gone home.
