Found this mower on my way home yesterday, in very good physical shape and got it going by replacing spark plug. Cable at carby end was tied in this bizarre way with electrical wire. I don't know what it was meant to achieve? I removed it and replaced with a zip tie to hold it against the carby so it could push the lever all the way to stop the motor.

Engine runs nice and quiet but it's running rough like it's out of tune. Instead of a smooth rhythmic beat it makes a sound like two motors going at once if someone knows what I'm describing?
What adjustments could I try?

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Hi MF,
Not sure what you mean but take the air filter off, get the motor running, move the governor so it revs up and and smack the heel of your thumb onto of the carby for a second, lift your hand off, let the revs come back up and repeat this several times. It can help clear a bit of blockage in the carby

Are both springs present at the throttle control? there should be 1 the control pulls to change rpm and another little one that is a damper. also make sure it is not over-revving, common that things get bent out of shape around the control on the carby by the mower getting pushed into trees etc.

Hi nath hi NormK,
no not over revving but now surging after I tried Norm's suggestion. I had to use ether to start as it wouldn't give a peep no matter what.
I have refilled it with reasonably fresh (a few months old) 95 premium.
Both springs are there.

Hi ,Mf, Norm and Nath,

Whenever I work on the sprint motors ,I would clean the fuel tank out ,dismantle and clean the carby out with compressed air then inspect the diaphragm and replace if necessary, assemble and adjust the springs.

Cheers
Max.

Sorry to cause you more problems MF but that proves the carby is the problem so as Max suggests clean and put a kit through the carby. Only proble then is I find after putting a kit in a carby it doesn't always fix the carb, most times but not everytime.

No NormK, not blaming you at all. Appreciate all suggestions. I really don't feel like pulling the tank assembly off and especially the springs apart.
How do I check condition of diaphragm should I go down that route?

You just check that the diaphragm hasn't gone hard and that the 2 valves are sealing like a whipper snipper carby.
If the diaphragm is distorted around the 2 fuel valves just replace the diaphragm Mf.

Cheers
Max.
