So it seems that I'm slowly pulling this edger to pieces.

I'm now trying to either repair or replace the pull starter on the 430.

Seperating the motor from the shaft was some enough and without issue but I'm a little stuck on removing the plastic housing surrounding the starter assembly.

It seems that the clutch needs to be removed in order to allow the plastic housing to expose the starter but the edge of a ring spanner or socket is too wide to snugly fit the 2 clutch bolts.

Does anyone have a some fix for this or enlighten me on what I might be missing....?

A beer or two later and willing to break in order to educate I've managed to remove the clutch.

I needed a 14mm socket which was then tapped onto the clutch bolts with a rubber mallet.

An impact driver did the rest.

Now I can see that the starter pulley housing looks OK but there is an obvious issue with some plastic sleeve or similar on the crank side.

Are these replaceable at all? I did search the Oracle named google but couldn't find anything on these specific parts.

TIA

Hi Lockstock

All the motor is basically is the old Ryobi plt motor. this video gives a general idea of how it should be set out

Effectively, that white plastic bit and the spring fit in the middle of the starter pulley.

Can you pull off the spring and white plastic bit off the motor and take some photos to see if it has melted and caused failure, or if a spring failure has caused this.

For now, do not remove the starter pulley - the spring will probably shoot out.

Annoying and sometimes difficult to refit but shouldn't damage it if it does happen - damage usually occurs by throwing the starter across the room in anger haha

It looks to me as though the white plastic has has melted/split.

There is a piece of green plastic inside the metal tube (which is inside the white plastic) and that looks to have sheered possibly away from the green housing.

I imagine the green plastic was like a guide to line everything up and when that sheared the alignment went off leading to more failures.

Hi Lockstock

I would dare say you are unfortunately pretty well right on with the diagnosis

This is a manual for the 430 with list of parts, but I can't see pull start. Perhaps try atom on monday?
