According to a commonly seen download, the B&S type numbers refer to things like accessories, decals, paint colours etc. But apart from trying to elucidate this info from head office and going over ground that someone may have walked before me, does this information exist in anybody’s information stash?
I have looked on the web and all sites I have seen just say to contact Briggs. Good luck with that.
I reasoned someone has asked this before.
Any info that will decode the type code numbers on B and S cowlings would be great

G'day twostroker,

Yep I don't think anyone will help here ,it's been asked before and Briggs are not helping.

Briggs just say "We do not break down the engines type number as the model number is broken down."

G'day Max and twostroker
For me, the Briggs Type Number is proprietary and rightly so.
I think it goes to confidentiality between Briggs and their clients.

Think of it as customisation or a deviation from the standard type.
The irony is that 'the standard type' could vary from market
to market and from time-to-time. How is that so ...?

When I worked for Briggs I had a good glimpse at
Briggs' Engine Application Centre at Milwaukee.

There, customers would send their machines [mowers, tillers,
snow-blowers, log-splitters ... etc.] to be tested for best match
between engine and machine.

Sometimes, when a known Type could not be matched an
additional type number was required.

This could involve anything considered minor to the Model Series -
gov springs, jetting, PTO dimensions, cooling, etc

Briggs does publish type number identifiers in their parts books;
they just don't link any information that would link a specific client
to a specific type.

In other words, there is no 'decoding' to be done.
Random changes - based on client needs - produce the
next type number.

I think that's right from my memory of Briggs.

Cheers

Hi Jack and twostroker,

Thanks Jack for explaining the type number system ,this makes a lot more sense for me and should do for others
knowing why the type numbers are not broken down.

Thank You Jack for your input. That someone who worked for Briggswas not able to find a straight forward list says it all.
Clearly the info is not just a simple list of numbers correlating with options .
