2-stroke mower addict!
So I picked up a bundle of mowers today, amongst the pile of mowers was this Masport. I haven't had time or the energy to look into Masport mowers. So I'm hoping someone can help me with any information regarding this mower. It in impeccable condition, been well stored. I haven't had the chance to look at it properly either. It isn't seized.

G'day Seanoss

This Masport is a bitsa ,the engine is off a later model mower the rest of the Masport is from the seventies.

Possibly was a Masport President or a Masport Whirlwind.

Cheers
Max.

Thanks Max, much appreciated information! I still think it's a nice piece even if it's not original. But for $100 with the Vulcan and this trailer load of stuff, it was well worth it. The 6 or 7 G4 carby units are all in perfect condition and, considering, the housing's for them go for between $40 and $60 online. Parting these mowers and all of their good quality parts will pay me back quite well!!!

So after having a really good look at the engine and the code stamped on it, the engine is a 1961 briggs and stratton but has had some parts replaced, I'm guessing because of the age it needed some stuff replaced. I'll do some more work on it through the week to find out exactly what is original and what has been refurbished!

After sending pictures of my mower to Masport directly they have suggested it could be a president 4, which has the iron horse base and is powered by a briggs and stratton 4 stroke engine. I still haven't had a time to look at the mower closer but have taken a picture of the serial numbers on the engine.

So it is the correct motor and is missing the original cowling. This missing cowling would have changed the original pull start orientation. Masport agrees with my suspicions!!!

Motor unfortunately isn't the original, it is a year 2000 date code.

Very common on these as they used bar blades, and often ended up with bent cranks and got new motors.

The original was a vertical pull gear start briggs - the engine on there now is a regular cup starter. The motor on there now does not have the gearstart facility (both in ability to mount the gear starter and no gear teeth on flywheel)

Yeah, I just got told that by someone I trust about the engine. Thanks Tyler. I'm just trying to work it all out and I have found that I keep getting told what's not correct and not really getting any advice on what is correct or of the correct age. I'm just doing the best I can, I'm no expert! I don't collect Masport mowers and I'm really just trying to find out if any thing on it is valuable and I can then sell on to make a few $$$ for my Victa restorations.....

They are a very solid mower with alloy deck, only downside is the bar blade

I suggest the correct age of the deck is before 1978 as after that they had usually had poly catchers (very heavy ones at that)

Another model name was the Jaguar - although they may have not come with side discharge chute (only rear discharge)

It is unfortunately not overly valuable, but if you get the right customer who values the fact it is a solid alloy no rust deck with a modern reliable engine, you might get $150 fully serviced

Hi Guys,

The Jaguar is a different base to the Masport at the top of the page.

Thanks Seanoss

Max, thats the Jaguar with the plastic catcher. I think I have seen an earlier one with a metal catcher and less 'chiseled"

But I agree - this one looks to be a President 4

G'day Max and Tyler, I appreciate all of your input! I have been given, what I think is a definite answer!!! The engine, as we know know, is a 2000 Briggs and stratton. The base and catcher are a 1980-1981 President and also called a whirlwind. A person I trust very much with information and guidance has taken his own time to go and find his old manual and research this for me! The picture attached is from his manual!
Thanks to all who have gone out of their way and taken their personal time to assist me! You are all legends and I love this forum and "ALL" members on it! Even if I have caused issues with some!
Cheers to all!

Hi Seanoss and Tyler

I've had about 10 early model Masports from 1969 to 1977 ,Vulcan ,President ,Whirlwind and have had the
later Jaguar ,I've never seen a early one with the Jaguar sticker on the cowl but have had about a mid seventies
Masport that had just Whirlwind on the front of the cowl the sticker was the same as the red sticker below but the
sticker was blue .

On the back top ledge of the base there is a chassis number the first two numbers are the year of
manufacture ,you could look for that Seanoss to see what year the mower is.

Cheers
Max.
