Hi all
just noticed that the 5hp I/C on my Rover Super Four 53 seems to be having issues starting and after pulling the spark plug off seemed to notice that it was rather sooty I regapped the old NGK and she sort of started and was thinking is there an ideal fuel mixture setting for these motors that gives cleaner running and better fuel economy or are these engines designed to run relatively rich and are particular to the CJ8 plug over NGK equivs. What I also notice that she seems to comeback slower after being bogged down or is it just a function of this engine due to its long stroke.

As an aside, would I be correct in thinking that these are one of the better briggs engines as she seems to be a rather torquey beast

Sounds like its running Rich. Clean or replace the air filter, then tuning can be a bit finnicky on these, but you want it somewhere in the middle. too lean it will cut out, too rich it will bog down and blow black smoke. In the middle you will find the most power/cleanest running. You should be able to go from idle to max revs without hesitation, just need to have a play with it.

Hi folks,

Yep; NGK plugs are way better quality than Champion, and have been for yonks.

The only major distinguishing feature of the IC series is the cast iron bore liner; but this greatly extends their service life, so long as they get regular oil changes, and air cleaner servicing/replacements.

Just gap the plugs to Briggs' spec, and they'll just keep on truckin'.

Cheers,
Gadge

Without the model and type numbers, don't if this has a fix idle mixture or not. Even valves being out adjustment can cause what appear to rich burn as there is not compression for complete fuel burn.

On that engine there is no idle mixture screw listed just a high speed mixture adjustment; therefore, idle mixture is fixed.
