Anyone tell me much about the application for this engine and maybe a value?

I have always known them as Villier Midget engines. Often used on Atco and Austral Villiers cylinder mowers - usually with a kick starter

Hello Vmow and Tyler.
This is a Villiers 98cc Midget Mk2.

https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/u...rs-mk-2-mk-3-midgets-history-record.html

The crankcase stamping might reveal its origin.
Best guess - a post WWII Atco.

Hope this helps.

my fathers' first motormower was a morrison reel mower,I bought one recently for $50nz , I now have 2 of these engines, among a few other Villiers engines, love'em, however, I'm having a bit of bother with timing, can anyone tell me what the degrees btdc (in imperial measurement, (eg;5/32. 5/16, or whatever) ) is? cheers all!

Just a guess but somewhere between 5/32 and 5/15th will be close enough to get it running. Big problem with Villiers was the were using the (prince of darkness) Lucas for their magneto coils and they were pretty terrible. I have fitted an external coil on a couple of small 2 stroke motorbike engines and small battery to provide spark. They worked well and were easy to start but this is probably not going to help you.

Usually the number looks like 164X for Morrison.

The timing is 5/32 before TDC.

Cheers
Max.

thanks Max, the old girl already runs, but was lacking in power a tad, cut grass ok but I had to rev up to keep going which meant that I had to run behind to keep up.. not good at 77yrs old, I had set the timing using guesswork by moving pston 'back a bit' from tdc...thought it might be a fuel prob, swapped a fuel tank and carb set off another motor, but no change, so suspected my timing was out a bit, I,ve reset the timing to 5/16 btdc, using the old 'blutac in the fins with a paperclip to a pencil to mark tdc etc;' trick, and will go to the 5/32 tdc, I'll post with results, thanks again.G.

Was always a rough and ready way of setting the timing but that is the way it was. Glad you got some spark from the old coil, they weren't that good when they were new

I've seen a few Victa 18 mowers where the secondary side of the coil has failed being the fine wires but usually
the thicker primary wires still work so you disconnect the points wire and wire it to the external car 6 Volt coil positive side
then negative on the car coil goes to the points and no battery is required.

Good point there Max, I will try to remember that next time I come up against a Lucas magneto, they were always problematic
