Hi all, a neighbor has this older machine which wont drive forward. On checking it over, I think I am on the right track assuming it would be the cork drive discs on the ''clutch'' plates. They seem cheap enough on Ebay, but it looks like a bit of a job to strip down and remove the discs /belt etc. Not too sure what labor time I should be looking at to see it out the door? Any ideas would be great. Cheers Geoff

Hi Geoff
always difficult to predict hours involved in getting things apart on these old machines, rust is the big enemy and one rusted component that you can't get apart can take you a day or more to remove. All depends on what your neighbor expects and understands the problems these things present. Different thing when you are repairing one for yourself, it takes as long as it takes but if you are trying to repair one on a fixed price then you will always come unstuck. I had a bloke contact me yesterday wanting a cheap mower, I told him I don't have the time to build him a cheap mower because simple things just take up so much time when one thing goes wrong

Thanks Norm, yes, I understand what you are saying. It can be like a bit of string, anyway he just called me to say it is all working, he says he had the handbrake on. ? I would have thought reverse would also have been disabled. Not to worry, wasn't looking forward to all the rusted on bits, requiring the air tools etc. Cheers. Geoff

Hi Geoff, brakes can do things like that, grad in one direction and do nothing in the other. Old drum brake motor bikes are a good case in point. I was trying to get a RWC on an Enfield Meteor twin front drums. New linings, drums skimmed and I could still push it forward with the brake on hard, try pulling it backwards and the brake was locked solid
