Hi all, a neighbor is asking me to take a look at his Cox Stockman. The complaint being that the drive is very slow, it is not too bad when cold, but when it warms it is not possible to mow, it just sits there. A shop has told him over the phone that if it is the hydro drive, get 2 grand ready. I am just wondering if it could just be the drive belt, or clutch maybe, before I take it on. I have worked on some of the older Cox models, but not a hydro drive unit. This machine doesn't have a great lot of hours on it either, so a bit puzzling really. Any help on what to possibly look out for would be great. Cheers. Geoff

I googled the model and found a parts diagram in it. Generally hydro's are non serviceable, but in the pictures it appears to be an up market hydro with the reservoir tank. Just check it has oil in it. Also check for leaks etc.

Not impossible that it is a belt or tensioner etc. You can usually tell by how it sounds when you try to drive, if it make like a groaning sound it is most likely low on fluid or a stuffed transmission

Thanks for the help, I will get it over to my shed this week and check those things. The rear end appears to be ''all boxed in'', but I noted a plate under the seat held by a few star head screws, that might give access to the top of the hydro unit. Cheers.

All done and dusted. Was just no hydro oil in the little reservoir tank for the drive. I guess over time heat etc would cause a bit of loss. This machine has had nil maintenance, so anythings possible. Spot on the money Nath, many thanks.

Meant to add, the rear chute has to be removed to access the tank filler cap. Very simple, 4 bolts.

Yes Nath, a shop had already quoted 2K without even seeing the machine. Their loss. Cheers.
