These carbs are confusing unless you study the cam in the carb and there are subtle differences in them and this is why they operate sometimes as BT says. This is why I modify them so I can get consistency in the way they operate

Thanks heaps for this norm. To be honest I was trying to avoid this mod but it looks to be the option il need to take. I've got many p/t engines here with little if not any consistency....

TJ, I can assure you that I do not enjoy spending an hour modifying every carby, I do not do it for the hell of it but it is the only way I can get them to work consistently and not get them coming back all the time because of the stupid problems these carbs cause

Definitely not for one second did I doubt your capabilities. Honestly I knew at some stage I would have to. Today I got my 3rd p/t going and it's full throttle up top to low when you push the lever down. Lol. I think it's mod time!
Also Norm Any tips with cleaning out a block?

I'm just glad they work to any decent capacity. I hate pulling apart a Victa carburettor and snorkel. I did one mod to a full crank only because it needed a carburettor fitted when I found it. I made a mess of the slopes of the cam but it goes well. Only thing is all throttle control takes place in the first quarter of moving the lever up! The rest makes no difference. At least it ticks over well.
Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Oh I'm definitely the same,im yet to do the mod and I know my patience is little so I wouldn't be Suprised if the cam turns out like Swiss cheese lol.)(jokes?) It was driving me made I was checking all the hoses seals etc etc even got sealant for anywhere that could leak air and to find out the carbs are inconsistent

The whole thing revolves around the poppet travel, if you look at it from fully closed to fully open the poppet moves less than 3mm and this is what makes the control very touchy and difficult to get a balance. If you don't want to cut the cam, if you just file the hump off the top of the cam this will eliminate the problem cause with cable having to push the lifter up and over it, this will smooth out the operation, never tried it but no reason why it wouldn't work

I had a look and that is definitely the case. I have a dremel handy so I'm happy to cut a cam or shave one back no drama. Making some good progress on some of these engines I just say. Some I have here I got on terrible conditions.... Obviously left outdoors lots of rust etc but with a clean up and once I get to the fundamentals as to why they arnt starting it doesn't take long to work out. The most successful mod so far I have done is the bypass of the switch to shut engine. I think that along with this cam mod I could get most of them out of trouble.
Also Norm, how would I kmow if the botto bearing is gone? Wobbles? Noise? If I tilt the mower on the side and turn the cutting disc? Trying to revive a couple cammandos, in fact one of the cammandos I currently doing a ground up build to keep for myself. I shall start a thread shortly.

Hi TJ, Every little mod makes them more reliable, as we know most of these get dumped because 1 the base has rusted out 2 the float needle has stuck 3 it has lost spark or the spark plug has failed 4 it has been straight fueled As for the bottom bearings failing I have only come across a couple and that is because once up and running there is a rumbling sort of noise. To test these motors to see if they will run, I go through all the tests, check spark, check decomp is working, fit my test carby and see if it will fire, if not I then try with a squirt of starter fluid in the plug hole and then if I don't get any indication that it might fire I can then be fairly sure it has been straight fueled so I don't go any further with that motor, it goes in the dead PT pile and at a guess there is 50 in that pile at the moment

I must say I only here good about these mods and obviously they have been implemented for a reason. When you think of it very silly reasons to throw them out. Such good mowers I personally like the 80s victas for my own house. Great bases and the powerful p/ts keep on singing. Thanks for the bearing indications.
I've played around with a couple 4 strokes,i must say Ive become a 1 eyed victa 2 stroke man now... Having lots of fun. Got the new utility bits a 160 going the other day. Bloody hell those older lowers without electrics and metal carbs are better
