Hi guys,

Sorry if the wrong forum to post this, it's not exactly an engine issue.
Ive got a mower, not really sure what it is, maybe a Victa. The pull cord pulls out easy but doesn't retract - (engine seems to turn over with this one pull so no dramas there).
I'm trying to remove the pull cord housing (if that's what it's called) to see what's happened to the coiled spring and try fix it but for the life of me cannot get this bolt off to access it.
I cant tell if the bolt extends down further below the plastic wheel and if so then it isn't possible to undo it without breaking the plastic.
How do I get it off? Ive tried penetrating lube and securing it from the other side but there isn't much width of bolt to work with and I'm rounding it off.

Cheers in advance!

Hi Rocketman,

I've not had to tear down a Victa starter to this extent, so can't be much help. However, does the following drawing help you out at all?

I don't collect mowers. I just require Multiple Mowing Solutions™.

You need to have a spanner on the bottom of the shaft (See the highlighted rectangle attached) and one on the top twisting in opposing directions. This will allow you to disassemble the starter assembly to replace the spring if that's what's required.

Just google it so easy ,Powertorque pull starter tells you everything you need to know. Just rebend the spring, don't need to replace them and you are good to go. Just hold the section pau13z indicated in a vice and undo the nut

Hi Rocketman,
Here's the answer. I found a new way to fix them, not mentioned in the manual.

Hey guys!

Well I got the thing off! The spring was super brittle and kept snapping when I tried to re-bend it so I got a new one.
Next issue is now when I'm putting it back together:
- I've put the spring in properly I think
- I install the little metal ring clip and line it up with the groove and tighten the bolt
- The problem is when I tighten the whole thing up I get to the point where it wont let the assembly spin and I pull the cord and it still stays out
- The cord retracts when I loosen the whole thing so it feels like I am tightening it too much but I thought the black housing should spin freely regardless of how tight the central bolt is?
- When I have loosened it and it seems to work, I can see the bolt moving up and down the nut as I pull and release the cord - I'm pretty sure this isn't supposed to be like this?
Any ideas?
- I can do a video if that's too difficult to understand.

Cheers smile
