Hi all I have a Briggs and Stratton engine on a greenfield tractor 11. I have had it started before but have just put in some wiring for the electric start. The engine cranks really well but will not fire. Have checked spark and not long cleaned out the carby. But it will still not fire. It did once yesterday but the starter motor did not stop it kept on running. Can anyone please offer suggestions. Anything would be greatly appreciated. It does have a pull start as well but even using that I sill can’t get it to fire. Please help
Hi Jared, Tried a bit of fuel down the throat of the carby, or some starter fluid? Starter locked in is either solonoid stuck , give it a tap and see if it releases, otherwise the ignition key may be stuck in the start position. You may have to isolate the start wire from the solonoid to prove what is going on.
Ok thanks for that I’ll try it and see how it goes. Do you by chance know where I can find a wiring diagram? I’m pretty sure I have it right but I did it off the top of my head and just want to double check it’s right
Hi Jared, there probably is a wiring diagram some where but there is so few wires it isn't needed. You have a heavy wire from the battery to the solonoid, from there solonoid to the starter. A small wire will then go from the center of the solonoid to the ignition switch. I'm not sure but you might not even have this wire if the solonoid is mounted on the dash and you just push on it. Not sure what you have. The only other wire that maybe kicking around is the alternator charge wire, but I'm guessing it probably isn't going to charge anyway
Ok then thanks for that. The solenoid that I have had 2 wires which I believe is a positive and the other is going to ground. I’ll double check this arvo thanks for your help
That is fine Jared, as you say with the small wires one to ground one to positive from the ignition switch. If the motor keeps cranking when you have let the ignition switch go, only 2 causes, ignition switch is not returning from the start position (faulty inside) or the solonoid is faulty, but I think from memory you bought a new one so I don't expect this as the problem
Thanks NomK I checked the wiring it is correct the starter keeps on cos the ignition switch has the ability to turn which keeps the ignition on so I think that might have been the problem. I tried using starter fluid to get it started but still won’t fire? I’m assuming that might be a bit of a problem?
Hi Jared, If it won't give an attempt at firing with a squirt of fluid and the starter is cranking the motor over then there is another issue with the motor it is not a carby issue. Carby may be a problem, but using the starter fluid bypasses the carby so it can fire for a second or two. This indicates a problem with either valves/compression or spark. It may be a timing issue if the keyway has moved/sheared ed
Is there a chance of it being the wrong spark plug? There is heaps of spark from the spark plug but is there a way of knowing if it is the right plug or not?
Could be the plug, wrong plug won't prevent it from starting, but plugs can seem ok out of the motor, but won't fire under compression. Try another plug, if you had it running before it should run again.
Hi normk I was just wondering, I tried what you said. and I managed to get the engine started with starter fluid but then it died straight away. I have cleaned out the carby very thoroughly. I did find that one of the linkages on the throttle control wasn’t working properly and fixed that. However it still seems as though the engine is still starving for fuel when it fires. Do you have some idea as to what it might be? Any suggestions would be appreciated cheers mate
Hi Jared, The whole point of that test was to prove the issue was the carby or the fuel supply to the carby. Cleaning these things does not always solve the problem but at least you now know what the problem is. This might solve the problem check it out first but I think this is the one you need. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12HP-Ca...-491031-490499-Engine-Part/132865316111?
