Anybody have any tips/tricks on getting rid of these, any poisons that work?

I wasn't going to mention it but the bastard possums were back last night, looks like the liquid amber tree will have to come down.
The Mynahs are a mates problem and they have been driving him mad for several years. I told him last night to scramble an egg and mix in 3 asprin in it. Hopefully his dogs won't eat the birds if they die.
I doubt a cd swinging in the breeze will scare these things away, they are a very cunning bird. His Alsatian caught one and one of the birds kept attacking it dive bombing it and pecking it on the head.I have had them doing that to my dogs as well over the years, they don't give up easily. Just not sure if the asprin will do the trick

Yes Billy I know, just probably not the best option in the suburbs though, would have got away with it once but you would get pinged too easily these days

Yeah, we can only look back fondly on those bygone days, when this was legal in Oz. Still is, in the UK and NZ.

Air arms were included in the definition of 'firearm' back in 1983, in Vic. Which always seemed totally illogical to me - after all there's no combustion involved in their operation! Before that, they were controlled items for users under 18, but not as firearms.

And Norm, cage traps are the only viable solution to these pests, if you have the room in your yard, in this day.

There are quite a few webpages around that have plans for these cages - there are commercial ones on the market, but you'd find it easy to build one.

They have professional shooters using very sophisticated slug guns in the UK just for shooting rats. They don't miss very often and they have counters on the guns so they know how many rats they have shot in an hour. I think I saw one shooter with about 200 rats in an hour

There are pro pest controllers here in Oz that do the same.
And take out feral pigeons in warehouses and such - after all, pigeons are only 'rats with wings'.

More legal hoops to jump through here, to be licensed to do this, though.

As for the birds your neighbor might try quite bottle rockets with reports. Otherwords they are quite until they are down range then the firecracker tips explodes. It like shooting off a gun in the middle of the flock of birds. I use them here on our Northern Blackbirds. They are so noisy during the Winter months here. They don't stay gone but it does run them off for the day so I can think without my ears ringing.

Sadly AVB, in the State of Victoria, the purchase and use of 'real' fireworks is essentially restricted to licensed pyrotechnicians. Civilians can only buy sparklers and 'poppers', over the counter.

The closest we could get to what you suggest, in areas where firing a shotgun is legal, is the 'Birdfrite' type of 12ga 'cracker shell' bird scaring cartridge. This is made for dispersing bird flocks at airfields - not cheap though. About AU$4 a shot!

I guess there is really only one way to get rid of these birds is to trap them and then put a tarp over the cage and the mower and start it up

Pretty much.

They are highly cunning buggers anyway - I can say from experience, that if you shoot a couple dead on the spot, the rest will piss off for some time. A .22 cal air rifle takes them out just like that!

looks like a few too many rules and regulations for my mate to comply with, he has an absolute hatred of these birds ever since he witnessed one fly down and peck the eye out of small parrot

Well, it's only necessary to sign up for a Council program, with all its red tape, if they supply the trap...

I'd be thinking along the lines of building a trap that'd fit inside a 240L wheelie bin.
Wouldn't it be a pity if the bin happened to fill with water, when there was a cageful of Mynas in it.

Yes I will build my own, found a few birdcages on gumtree that should do the job. Can't believe what I read on the RSPCA site regarding these pests

Yeah, the RSPCA has well and truly been infiltrated by animal libber nutjobs, these days.
Just not quite as bad as extremist organisations like PETA - yet.

The RSPCA's an organisation to which my personal attitude now is, I wouldn't give them the steam off my piss!
