The top 2 pics is a Rolls Royce Merlin, 27 litres, liquid cooled inline engine used in the Spitfire,Hurricane, Mosquito, Lancaster and P51 Mustang,
The next pic is an installed engine in a ex-RAN Fairey Firefly aircraft (pics below) and is a Rolls Royce Griffon, 37 litres (2035hp) liquid cooled inline engine....
What a monster!! grin

Hi Darryl,

Nice photos, I like looking at old war planes, I Remember about 10 years ago, a bloke fully restored a spitfire in his shed at Unley "suburb of Adelaide". I was amazed how small the spitfire was with a massive Rolls Royce engine powering it.
Pilots were pretty brave back then.
The spitfire has now been moved to the aviation museum at Port Adelaide, if you ever get the chance its well worth a visit.
cheers gmax
