Hey all,

One thing I noticed that differed heavily from the old powertorque mustang I am working on, and my tornado is carbon deposits in the exhaust outlet.

The mustang has bricks of the stuff (and I am guessing it will be the same when I rip off the head soon too), and it is as hard as a rock. While the Tornado has virtually nothing at all.

I am assuming this is down to the cruder oil used, and the greater amounts of this oil that was in the mix in days gone by, vs the newer semi synth stuff I have always used in the tornado.

That being said, should I bother trying to remove the carbon on the mustang? Or just let time, 98 octane and better oil work its magic through use? It doesn't appear to be having any detrimental effect (that I know of) for running.

I use 98 and full synth motorbike oil and have had no further issues with carbon deposits. I have noticed slow improvement, but its probably best you remove them.

Rip the head off, plug the transfer port with rag and use some small files (rats tail, etc) to clean out the port. Make sure no loose carbon falls into the cylinder, and don't be too hard and score anything

If you can track down a cleaner like caltex techron with PEA cleaner in it, then find some thick grass and mix 10 ish ml into a litre of 25:1, find some thick grass and give it a bit of a hammering, that might work as well

I think Nulon pro strength extreme clean has it - caltex dont sell techron here any more

Hey Tyler,

I got to give the mustang a good caning today, mowing some thick grass for about half an hour. I wanted to see how it held together before I changed the head gasket and whether the compression would put out plenty of power. No problems, but I think I will take your advice and get rid of it.

Hi Sapper and Tyler,
here is the exhaust port on a 125 of mine. I will need to pull the head off anyway, as it has a broken fin and I have a spare I want to fit.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Hey guys,

I will give her a workover with the files then, and clean them up. Must be the old dino oil from the good old days doing its thing.

Yes, probably is Sapper. Use JASO FC or FD oil and we shouldn't really have to worry about any more build up
