Hi everyone,

Just got back home after a 12 hour road trip to pick up my first Scott Bonnar. I have a bit of work to do that’s for sure!

I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation where to get the twin rails welded up in South Australia?

It has a new motor and had just been serviced due to not being used. Other than the rails and a slightly bent blade on the cylinder it looks really good.

Hi Luke,

Hope you picked this one up at a very good price considering the lengthy trip you've made to collect it. I must admit the prices being asked for old rusted relics is rapidly becoming totally absurd with one here in Adelaide having a $550 price tag on Gumtree at the moment. 4 years ago I wouldn't have paid anymore than $35 for that, mmmmmmm how times have changed eh ?

Anyway I must admit I get any of that sort of work done by my neighbours father down at Strathalbyn.

In this instance I feel it's probably best you give Steve Rose a call at "Australian Saws and Blades Pooraka" and ask him. I'm sure he'll know someone that will be able to help you out.

Cheers,
BB.

Hi BB,

Got it for $450.00 considering the motor hasn’t been used since it had been put on and just been serviced. There is the $450.00 there, so it’s just a matter to get the supports fixed up and reinforced.

Sadly things like price were always going to go up, due to popularity of having nice grass and with YouTube and Facebook. I would of got one 10 years ago but with my old back yard was 1200squares as well being a rental. So it wasn’t worth me investing in water system and full out renovations.

Then the front yard at the old place had a huge hill and was just a pain in the ass to mow.

Those Briggs engines are only $249 if you shop around, well anyway that's how much I've paid for the last 4 that I've purchased for others and myself, but yes as a total package I understand where you're coming from. BTW where did you have to drive to ?

I will say that these new generation Briggs units are the best to put on these feeble Twin Railers that have certainly lived on way past their intended lifespan.

In previous times these machines required quite a bit of strengthening during repairs but with these engines they only require all the stress fractures grooving out and zapping up with a Mig by a good operator doing it without inflicting too much heat into the rail.

Anyway I'm sure Steve will have a contact to pass on to you.

Cheers,
BB.

Hi BB

I travelled to Mildura from Mount Gambier, worst part was when I got there they told me they had one at a cricket club as well. If I had the cash I would of got both which would of been very nice but not sure if the wife agreed with me lol.

The crack is quite substantial as it looked like someone has tried to fix it in a previous life. Not sure if it’s worth sharpening the reel or just buying a new one?

I’ve attached photos below.

Not too much wrong with that reel from what I can see. There's plenty of life left in it and as such if one of the blades has a bend in it it will be easily fixed as far as I'm concerned.

So someone has been there previously butchering it without proper skills it seems. A good operator will have that repaired in no time though.

I must admit though $250 would've been a far nicer price. Still plenty out there to be had and honestly they aren't rare at all as some may want you to believe.

Anyway seems as though you've got a good full strip down job in front of you.

Cheers,
BB.

Yeah I totally agree that they have butchered it, sad that it was looked after by a mower place in Mildura as I have the receipt.

I would of been happy at $250, I see hear about people getting given or paying $100.00 for one and all I can think is where am I when this happens.

I’ll have to start tear down soon as I’m coming to Adelaide on the 10th of March for my son. So while I’m there I’ll get someone to fix the frame for me and the reel sharpened and bed knife.

Plus get any supplies needed that I think I may need.

Any good tear down videos going around?

Hi BW,

Sorry but there aren't any tear down videos available on this site, just specific task orientated ones.

If there's anything I can do for for you prior to your trip let me know.

Cheers,
BB.

Hi BB,

Cheers for letting me know I’ve watched the others and sort of had an idea from them.

I’ve started to pull the old girl apart and seems pretty explanatory. As with anything you pull apart first time 100th time catalog the parts.

I’m going to put some photos of the gears I believe some need to be replaced. The frame was a little worst than I was expecting. But I’ve since found a guy in Adelaide who can fix it all up and said by far hasn’t been the worst he’s seen out of over 75 he’s done.

He’s also said can paint the whole thing for me which is awesome as by the time I purchased everything to do it would cost me more than he’s offered.

Hi BW,

I'd say that the cutter sprocket will require replacement.

Any chance of letting us know who it actually is that's going to do this job for you ?

Cheers,
BB.

Hi BB,

His name is Darrall and lives in Valley view.

For $105 doing grit blasting new rails, welding and primer.

Then $100 to paint the whole mower, in Hammertone olive green which he’s got matched and has 4ltrs of the paint
