Does anybody have a method of removing the speed nut on these line trimmers that holds the inner cup up tight on the shaft. I usually don't bother with these things but I pulled a couple out of the shed and got them running but they need the bump heads replaced. People keep asking me for line trimmers and I just tell them they are not worth the trouble when you can get them on ebay for about $150 with 4 or 5 different cutting blades

I thought that part was pressed and couldn't be removed. Maybe another shaft may fit.

You need to lever the washer side up and the use a wire cutter to brake the washer. I have plenty of the washers to re-fix the heads. cheers2

Norm, I have levered it up slightly with screwdriver, then grabbed with vice grips, and twisted back and forth until it comes all the way off

As said those Homelite style heads push nuts has to be levered out or cut. What I use now is a modified small flat tip screwdriver that bent into a semi circle ( around 90 degree arc) as to slip under the nut to get to the catch fingers and lift them up as I go around the push nut so I can save the nut for reuse. Once you get it off then you can remove the adapter if needed just note that many of these are NLA separately. Replacement of the same style usually have a new push nut in the packaging or at least it is that way here.

I even use the same style tool to get the push nuts on the MTD front spindle axles off
