G’day,

Great forum you have here - it seems like a real genuine community. Happy to be a part of it & hope I can start to begin to contribute a little in the coming months!

I’ve recently picked up a Rover Rancher autodrive from a farmer down the road (cost me $380). New brakes, carb, magneto, battery). She looks the goods & runs as well as I would expect an old lawn tractor to perform. However (there’s always a ‘however’)..

I’m having some real issues with the accelerator/reverse pedal. I have to push extremely hard to get moving & it just seems like I’m not getting all the acceleration I should - however I can’t push the pedal any further as it’s already hard on the floor.

I’m hoping I could find some input from fellas who have had similar issues and also see if there’s any other common issues with this model machine that I should be aware of! Not to mention I can’t find a parts list or manual for the model ( 28189/180)

I’ll finish this post with a pic, everyone loves ‘em.

Cheers,
Jake

my first thought if your not getting good drive and assuming hte drive system is similar to earlier rover auto drives would be that the mower might need the cork clutches replaced. not an expensive job just a matter of dismantling the drive discs under the seat, scraping off the old corks and gluing on new ones

Welcome

Ok well for a start, those chunky tyres on the back are a big giveaway that this machine has been used on slippery hills. Those conditions are murder on the transmission in these, plus I see it is the later 16hp, the rover transmission was never really designed for the bigger horsepower.

Have you checked that all the belts are tight? how do the corks look, should be 4-5ish mm thick, (under the seat between the big pulleys.

Now You couldn't pick a harder model to change the drive clutch linings. As said above, changing the corks isn't a hard job, scrape the old ones off and contact cement new ones on. but to do that you will need to remove them. on this model it involves removing the sub frame at the back. which holds the entire rear axle transmission assembly.

If you have subscribed and found the parts list section for rover the 28166 parts/owners manuals suit you're machine.

Thanks everyone. I’ve taken some photos & found the user manual. Unfortunately, there’s no diagram or illustration that shows how to replace the corks.

I’ve noticed that there is also play in the arm (black piece of steel in the photo) when it moves left-to-right when selecting forward and reverse.

On a side note - I know the farmer that sold me the machine. His property is dead flat. He had a puncture and just replaced the tire with whatever he had sitting around.

Thanks everyone for your replies so far!

The tyres that are on it, I think they are normally used on ATV's

Judging by the first photo there is barely any cork left! When you say there is play in the black metal arm are you talking like 5mm or 20mm?

There won't be instructions or a procedure in the manual as to replace the corks was always like a dealer job. you just have to pull it all apart. Its a few years since i did one of these, but from memory the rear sub frame comes out quite easily.

Damn. Looks like I’ll have to do the corks myself then and try to figure it out.

There’s about 5mm of play left to right on the black arm. It’s magnified in the foot pedal - as there’s heaps of slop in it.

Hey Jake,

Did you manage to replace the corks? - I’ve just taken the transmission out of mine (28166) And I’m waiting for the glue to cure before put it all back together again. I followed the manual - relatively straightforward really - only real issue was working out what the actual parts were called according to the manual - as although there’s parts manuals for the later models, I couldn’t find one for our models. If you’re still having trouble, I’m planning on uploading a PDF and series of photos showing the steps I took.

Cheers Andy

G'day swampyro,

The thing to realise is, that the Manuals/Parts List section resides in the top level of the 'Questions On Ride On Mowers' section, so that it's 'central' to all of the brand subsections. Keeping all this stuff in the one place makes maintenance and updates muchly easier for the ODK staff!

He be here: https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php/forums/75/1/questions-on-ride-on-mowers.html

Cheers,
Gadge
