The quest toward the back of the overfull shed continues. I came across the Honda HRU19D deck I picked up with handles, blade plate, catcher and fuel tank off the curb a few months ago.
My original idea when I got it out of the shed was to sell it, but then I spotted something else. My rusty Victa tornado 300 with v40 Chonda and I had a think.
Blasphemy I know, but would a OHV Chonda knock off fit on a deck designed for an OHC Honda?
And what about shaft length? I think it should as they had to use the height ring on standard 18 inch decks.
Also, I have got the 19 inch 4 blade carrier on the victa as well - considering the Honda deck is also 19 inch (assuming that's what the 19 in the model number means) will it fit and cut at the right height?
Will have a bit of a play around with it and see how it goes - worst case I just need to buy a honda blade boss as I already have the blade plate
Hi Tyler, Lots of questions there and there is never a one piece fits all answer. The Chonda will bolt on, will it be the same cutting height, that depends on the offset in the blade carrier, some are deeper dished than others so this can vary the height of the blades up inside the body. I have not looked at what can be done to fit a Honda blade carrier to a Chonda one, it can be done but I'm sure it will require a lathe to get it centered up. The Hondas I have played with all seem to have the same diameter blade carrier but use longer blades to become the 19 inch. The Hondas and Chondas have the 22mm blade carrier which puts another problem in the boss mix. I have had to turn out the Honda bosses to fit the Briggs shafts so I can use the smaller diameter Honda blade carriers on the 16 inch mowers I have been putting together recently
From my own experience and as you (Norm) are aware I changed Honda engines, taking one from a Victa and putting it on the Honda Chassis as the original Honda OHC engine (GCV-160) smoked like a train.
To my surprise I noticed that I couldn't use the Honda Blade carrier as the original Genuine Honda engine uses a 25mm diameter shaft while the GCV-160 Honda's used for Victa's had a 22mm shaft, thus I had to use the Victa carrier and boss on the Honda chassis. The only issue that seems to be is that the blades don't go right out to the skirt, thus losing a bit of vacuum underneath.
What I'd like to do is have a 1.5mm thick sleeve turned up so that I can use the Honda blade carrier and blades on the same branded machine.
Cheers, BB.

Interesting how the shafts differ. I have the 19 inch victa blades on the carrier now, so hopefully they might work
I will have a fiddle late next week and see what I can cobble together (maybe cobble isn't the right word as I don't want to stuff around too much with the working of a component spinning at 2800 rpm with 4 knives attached)
And if you really want to go overboard you can always use the blades off a 24, now they are the real deal when talking blades. Bit more expensive at $11/12 a pair though, they go out to 22 inch on the Victa standard blade carrier
I picked up a pair from an old old hardware store for $5.50 - was planning to see how they fit on my Supaswift big bob 21 inch, but havent got to it yet.
Hi BB, I may be able to help you with that sleve you need, I will know tomorrow, I have just removed a Suzuki from an Ariens and it obviously had a Briggs on it previously and it has had a sleve fitted to it so the Briggs drive pulley would fit. I am fitting a GXV Honda to it and if that has a 25mm shaft I won't need the sleve, that is if I can get it off
Wow thanks, I never knew that someone else would have had one made or even better that it was made so as to suit a batch of engines to a boss that was a current production item.
I think you'll find that all the GXV-160's had a 25mm output shaft diameter if it was fitted to a Honda originally. It seems only when the Honda engines were made for OEM fitment for third parties such as Victa etc. that they made them with the same size shaft as their competition, such as Briggs etc.
Cheers, BB.

BB somebody has had this made, it wasn't for the boss it was made so they could run the Briggs pulley on the 22 mm shaft. It is about 40mm long, just have to be able to get it off without damaging it.
Honda's are boring engines to use. They don't even feel good to pull start. They are the Toyota Camry of mower power plants, functional but lacking character.
Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!
MF, to most people mowing the lawn is boring and most don't give a toss about what a motor feels like, all they want to do is get the lawn cut with as little fuss as possible and for as long as possible. The real Hondas (not the lookalikes) will do this for many many years and if that is boring most people would love to have a boring mower
It's amazing when folks ask you what your hobby is and one replies with "I enjoy working on Lawnmowers", then most just look at you and simply put their nose up in the air and walk away.
That's the way many think about mowing lawns, to them it is a chore and not an enjoyment and that's why Lawnmowers get treated the way they do and as Norm suggested, Honda's just do it more reliably time and time again.
Your right MF they are no Subaru WRX, rather they're a Falcon Taxi on LPG or as you put it nicely a Toyota Hybrid Camry, quiet and boring.
Cheers, BB.

Hi BB, this is the sleve it is 25 OD and 22 ID, The Honda shaft is 25 and then steps down to 22 for the boss. Do you recognize the blade carrier, I think it is Masport? If the sleve is good for you what do you suggest we do with it, I'm not paying $8 for Aus Post to rip us blind.
That's exactly what I need and to turn it up would really cost more than the postage, so I guess the consumer is going to pay. The consumer is me so that means I'm going to have to pay what it's going to cost. I wouldn't have it any other way. For small stuff like this AP is the only choice, but with larger items AP is a total rip and as such I'll never use them for that sort of stuff.
I just sent a box that's 550mm x 260mm x 300mm and weighed in at 3 Kg to Melbourne (Pakenham) via a courier company and it cost me $18.00. Now for the same sizing via AP it would've been around the mid $40's. So in that instance AP is way outside the ball park, but for small padded bag stuff they are in their own league. I guess it's all about what the contents are worth to who ?
I'll give you a call as we really shouldn't be boring all the readers with our personal stuff LOL !
Cheers, BB.
PS. Yes it's a Masport Carrier.

Ned Kelly is alive and well in Australia getting around under the name of Aus Post, I asked my wife to post this sleve to BB probably weighs 10 grams and she came back with the docket for $10.05, I will never ever post anything ever again using those thieving mongrels.
I must admit I grapple to comprehend how they can extort such exorbitant prices when I can send a large box with two large tail lights inside for $18.00 via a Courier from Adelaide to Melbourne.
The large box was picked up from my home last Thursday and it arrived delivered to the customers door yesterday. Now you couldn't complain with that, but $10 plus for a small padded bag, that's daylight robbery.
Cheers, BB.

BB, I will never ever send even a letter ever again with that pack of thieving bastards, I should have taken it to the Post office myself because then I could have given them the biggest mouthful and just walked out and thrown the sleeve in the bin. Never again will they catch me ever.
Well after bucket loads of emery rubbing internally I've finally managed to fit the sleeve to the Honda snuggly and now the original blade carrier is fitted. One thing I still need to do and that is replace the key steel that's locks the boss to the crank with a wider size as the sleeve doesn't allow correct protrusion into the keyway of the crank. So I've ordered a piece from CBC Bearings as good ol' South Australia can't keep anything in stock and it's got to come out of where else ? but Melbourne...........of course.
Anyway I still have to procure a set of 4 new blades to fit but once these normal things are done then that'll be it and good happy mowing of everyone else's gardens that I do with a conventional mower is concerned.
Once again a huge thank you to Norm who helped out with the sleeve. You're an absolute Champion.
Cheers, BB.

loooks like a masport quad cut carrier. and ive got a couple of questions on it if you dont mind. how thick is the steel its pressed from? whats the size of the centre hole? and how high do the blades sit relative to the height of the shaft mounting point?
been looking at adapting a pair onto my 40" murray ride on cos bar blades suck. i had semi successfully adapted a set of victa mulching discs with trimmed super 24 blades but the pressed profile of the victa disc lowered the blade height below the edge of the deck resulting in bad scalping on any sort of bump. basically looking for a carrier and swing blade setup that is as close to flat as possible to keep blade height near to std as possible, and ideally as close to 512mm dia as possible( masport 20 quad cut lists as 515mm)
