I have about 40 PT motors here that have been straight fueled over the years. I'm wondering if these might be worth rebuilding some time in the future or do I just dump them now. We all remember the old FJ Holdens in the Trading Post, 2 for $50, build one out of the 2, and look what they are worth today. I doubt the old PT would end up in this situation, but stranger thing have happened, look at the craze of the Toecutters

Hi Norm,
If you could bore and hone them yourself why not. My father in law is a tool maker and has offered to bore a couple of blocks for me for nothing. I’ve thought about doing that and buying a ball/brush hone to have a couple of fresh motors. My 2 PT motors are good runners now so I haven’t bothered. I will probably do it one day just for fun though. Would be good to experience a freshly built PT. An engine shop I chatted to about it recently wants $110 to bore and hone - happy to go 20, 40 or 60 thou over. Not too bad in my opinion but I doubt any money could be made out of this further down the line.
Cheers,
John

Thanks John,
I haven't bothered seeing what is involved in repairing them because I know it is not cost effective and as I have at least 30 good running motors I should be ok for a while. I just didn't want to dump them and find in a few years they are really hard to come bye

Gday Notm,
I guess it all comes down to how much room they take up. Could you maybe just thin the herd a little?
Cheers,
John

G'day NormK,
My personal opinion... Keep them :-)
As you're aware, you can't get them anymore because they're not making them anymore. If there is a way to resurrect them, at some point they'll be worth something to someone.
I confess I'm a bit bias, I love the PowerTorque engines, especially the later VE series.
You may find it's cheaper to buy the gear to rebore yourself if you have enough of them. If you're willing to pay say $60 each and you have 40, if you can buy the machinery for $2400 or less you're saving money (unless you include the piston and ring cost)

I wouldn't be surprised if they out rank the full cranks in value one day as they were a solid design with a great starter set up plus were more powerful. The long shaft ones even more so as they can be made to work on other makes of chassis.
Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Due to the sheer volume of PT's made I doubt that collectors would ever drool over them, but who knows what people will be doing/thinking in an another hundred years

I feel that electric is the future, however, we're not there yet for much more than small-average sized yards. Once they do get there, then they may start getting rare. That said, if the battery required to be a viable alternative for larger or small commercial spaces is that large and heavy, it's possible the petrol mower will be around for a significant time.
Personally, I'd also prefer to see a new PowerTorque. Yes it may add complexity, but they could even make an injected model, increasing efficiency and keeping the additional power of the PowerTorque 2-stroke.
It's nice to dream.

I think people may be taken by how they are among the last mass produced two strokes that are relatively simple. Much like an old Lister stationary engine.

BB, you can still do your doh on muscle cars now, a friend of my son just bought a 1956 F100 for $48,000, when he got it home he found receipts for work that had been done to it and they totaled over $100,000

As the famous segment on the Triple M "Kennedy / Molloy" show goes, "Some Men are Idiots"
Cheers, BB.

Hi TJ, yes we need pics so we can see what is going on, and a pic in through the exhaust port can give us an idea. I can'y remember, have you had this motor running?

Wont let me attach for some reason.... I had a more in depth look. It's very dirt obviously ran with claggy filter that I got it with. I put some fresh parts in the carby and for some reason it revs up at low if I push the throttle half walf it goes low..... It's driving me nuts. Everything seems to be on properly. Could it be the poppet valve setting?

I put some fresh parts in the carby and for some reason it revs up at low if I push the throttle half walf it goes low.... Yep, that will do it TJ - I have seen absolutely neglected lm's, covered in muck externally (and inside) yet go perfectly. As soon as I clean it, it plays up Have to suggest Norm's carby mod - ideally I prefer leaving things as factory - but in this case, the factory was asking for trouble

I also got anotehr pull starter off another p/t I had laying around with a very good o ring as the original one I had on it lost its tension which il need to fix. Started it and was never the same. Actually revs high on idle on mid way low and run back to full crank... Scares me
