Does anybody know what size the jump starter is on these, I have been through all my hex keys and can't find anything that fits. It will be imperial I guess being American. It is bigger than 5mm but smaller than 5.5mm so it has me a little stumped. Another thing I have noticed is that it says no mix fuel and it has an oil filler point on it that says fill to this point. The colour of the oil in there tells me it looks like sump oil but I see no other reason to think it might be a 4 stroke
Thanks Max, once I had pulled the cover off I could see the rocker cover, I got it running but the pull start is a bit problematic hence I was looking at the jump starter. They have a good range of them corded,cordless, one to put in a drill, just need to find one of them out here, heaps better than trying to pull start it.
I would grind down an old Allen key that was slightly too large Norm if it's an odd sized starter hex or grind down a high tensile bolt head and put the bolt thread end in the drill.
Those have a clutch/sprag design in them so it won't grab if the motor revs faster than the drill before you remove it. Not sure what the bloke wants to do about it but it is a much better idea than the pull starter on them
The other issue with this brushcutter is that it seems stiff in the shaft somewhere. It is a split shaft and the lower section/head spins freely, so the drag must be up towards the clutch end. It requires high revs to get it spinning and when the revs drop it stops quickly and it can also just stop the motor occasionally.
Thats funny Norm, I have the straight shaft end off of one of these (Made a bitsa at the tip from the Straight shaft rover lower shaft and Full crank Ryobi head).
Mine is tight at the bottom once the shafts are connected - must push the inner cable tight a bit.
I ripped apart the head and completely re greased with bearing grease (theres no grease port) - it helped a bit.
Another thing I have found a bit troubling is that the fact it is a 4 stroke and having an exhaust stroke it is more difficult to find compression stroke than on a 2 stroke
I picked up a ryobi 4 stroke last month which i believe is the same motor - the valve clearances are .011 inch - there is only one nut on each valve rocker which you tighten/loosen - not 2 nuts locked against each other
My one had low exhaust valve clearance, after adjusting it the comp improved a good bit
Well Norm if you were referring the jumper starter shaft on these full crank engines it neither metric or SAE hex. It is a pentagon (5 sided) shape and would require a matching pentagon tool.
As for the valve clearance you probably have either the AC3 or AC4 version. the valve for these engines is 0.003”-.006”(.08-.15 mm) for both valves. The Ryobi AC10 is also the same clearances.
Now my personal luck with these 4 cycles is they are good when they work but are prone to cylinder failures due to the dipper oil system which only oils the engine when upright and not one side or upside down.
I thought the hex didn't look quite right and now I know why, because it isn't a hex. I'm not going to waste much time on it I need to get on with building more mowers, in particular a couple more Victa 24's the 2 I had went out the door in the last couple of days. Amazing what a bit of sunshine and warmth can do to the grass
Right the opposite here. It have been in the mid to upper 90F lately until this morning when got up it was the lower 50F. Our Fall here is just starting and I am kinda glad to see the grass slowing down. It has been a long hot Summer here.Now it looks like I be get a break for a while from the mowers. Just chainsaws and ATVs for a few months.
