Evening All

Another nice old Victa on Gumtree - a vc mustang

Seems all the grilles are intact, deck and catcher intact, magic eye still there, chrome nice - pretty good for $80.

Hopefully someone who appreciates it ends up with it

Hi Tyler,

Nice example I must say, not that this particular "green cowling" on a green mower ever really excited me I might add.

I'll admit I'm somewhat surprised at how cheap all these so-called collectable mowers are being advertised for and then what do they actually sell for ?

I've recently fallen across a whole stack of about 500 plus mowers and there are 2 Victa Twins in that lot and I'm really wondering if it's actually worth my while fishing them out and bringing them home ???

Cheers,
BB.

Well someone got a good deal - the ad is gone

Yes BB, it is interesting how some put these up for insane money and still sell. Also funny how some try for 12 months and never sell due to insane prices - much like that big 26 inch electric SB that the guy keeps putting up for thousands.

Regards
Tyler

G-day Tyler, NormK & Bonnar_Bloke,
a lady from a local church gave me one of these years ago, in similar shape.
You're right B_B, I'm not too enamoured with all that green or the design of the cowl these days.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Sure the green would not win in the pretty stakes these days but back then it was what was underneath that made people buy them

Strangely though Norm as time when on they reduced the sizing of all their engine covers and exposed the engine so you could actually see what you were buying.............apart from the Vortex mowers which reverted back to nearly full covering again.

Those early covers were just an exercise in 70's styling which soon disappeared.

Cheers,
BB.

PS. I've noticed that no one has commented on the Victa Twins I mentioned. This must prove what I thought is what's happening and that is their popularity is waning as are most Victa's for that matter.

Because they are s**t. I wish someone would work out a way to modify them to fit a PowerTorque on the base. The base is great, though catchers are even harder to find than a regular width thumb latch.

BB,
I think that when people start collecting mowers and in particular Victas they think the ultimate prize is to get a Victa twin for their collection. Most people here are well aware of the problems with the twins and are not going to fall into the price bidding frenzy they usually create, although I did see one on gumtree recently that was supposedly running and it hung on there for quite a while and it was only $150. Can't remember if it had a catcher

They are an interesting mower, but I am only interested in their extra cutting width for use as a mower for large patios. Parts are too hard to come by if something goes wrong. Besides, I like the engine head to stick out the side, as I always felt that was a defining feature of the thumb latch series that I always found fascinating.
The Twin does away with that and it always did and continues to bother me. I got "lucky" and was given one through someone I know and later found a matching catcher.

I've got a couple of twins. Found one ages ago by the side of the road. Missing too many parts so I bought another. That was a goer but died when it lost crankcase compression (then I found a fair amount of scoring on the pistons as well.) I have 3 or 4 motors, so I guess I should try to sort out a combination that works, and use it.
They do mow well., when they go. I can zip though my lawns much quicker than I can with my aged Jetfast. Then again, probably any decent mower can out-mow a Jetfast! Still it is 40 years old now and still runs ok (B&S engine).
To be fair, total time spent mowing is about the same. With the Jetfast you put straight petrol in it, open the throttle, pull the rope and start mowing. With the twin, you spend half the time starting it, then race around the lawn.

Hi VT,

So you are saying they're not all they're cracked up to be ?
