Hi,

I got a rover I5500 from the recycle centre. It was missing the pull starter rope when I got it but I hadn't realised it was also missing the rope holder drum. I don't have any that will fit it in my pile of stuff and the ones that do fit are both broken in some way. If anybody has a spare that they can sell please let me know. The picture shows the blower housing without the rope holder drum. the blower housing is OK I just need the bits that are missing. I think that's the rope drum, bolt, spring and washer.

Hi Sparker, i bought one new a couple of years ago and it cost me about $32 from a local Rover dealer.
I've also fitted GXV160 starters to them but it's a little more mucking around. Use the same blower housing, cut off the old starter and bolt the GXV starter on making sure you use the right one as there are 2 types available, the one with the flat pawls and the one with the round pawls, you need the one with the round pawls. Use pan head 1/4 inch bolts and put them in from the bottom up, and finish off using nylocks. Putting them in top down will see the nuts hit the fan on the flywheel.
Now that i think about it the spool, spring, friction plate, pawls, etc may fit from the GXV starter directly into the rover starter; try it, and if it works let us know, otherwise put the guts back into the GXV starter and retrofit it as outlined above. With tyhe above process you cannot refit the original dress cowl over the new starter. The GXV starters are cheap enough on fleabay, $10-$15 and work well as a cheaper alternative to the genuine.

Thanks Bigted. As luck would have it, I have the non-round GXV160 starter. Why won't these ones work on the same process?. However, you've got me thinking about trying some of the other ones I have, like the Rover Suzuki 2 stroke pull starter.

They fit, but the pawls jam up in the starter cup because it's the one with the rectangular holes cut out of it. It'll work if you change the cup to match the starter.

Thanks. I managed to cobble together a working pull starter for it. This problem happens a lot with those rover covers.
