Hi Jacko Sorry not to have repliesd re your Vertical pull starter. I have been trying to remember the easy way to replace the rope but will have to go and get an ols starter to refresh the brain box, One thing is important .If the rope broke and the starter rewound back in with a lot of speed it is most likely thet the end of the spring will have over run and be bent over where it attaches to the centre post. remove the plastic cover carefully as the spring may fly out. Have a look at the inner end, They can most times be staightened out as the end is left soft at time of manufacture.
