Ty, if the hand grips are missing, my prewar ATCO had solid, cast aluminium hand grips shaped like the old glass coke bottles or traditional wooden file handles, with a short slot so their angle could be varied a bit. The actual area your hand contacts had been smoothed and polished - it might have been a hand-buffing operation rather than a lathe job, I seem to recall they weren't as perfectly symmetrical as a lathe-turned part would be, and they were polished. Fairly skilled hand-finishing labour was available in Britain very cheaply before the war.
