I wonder if you could cast your eye over these gears from the Vinco "Shay" gearbox.
http://www.montevideomaru.info/For%20James/Gearbox.htm It took a bit to get the mower plate off and when I opened the gearbox instead of oil they had filled it with grease which needless to say didn't lubricate it properly. I know this is difficult but in your opinion are the gears worth repairing? The brass bearing seem quite good.
