For the gap you can use a business card. Now as to the coil being faulty it might not be it could be the electronic module which is pop riveted to the engine housing (it is a small silver box). If it does not have the module then it will be a complete coil change as the coils have the module built into the coil which can be a real pain when they break down.

The old way was good because the coils very rarely became faulty only the module and the cost was a lot less only around $20-$30 compared to $50 + for a new coil.

You should be able to swap the carbies around but use the old brass main jet (the one that holds the primer cap on).
