There is an upside to the combined setup. It delivers a more powerful spark which leads to more consistent starting I imagine.
You have nothing to lose pulling your old coil apart to see for yourself how feasible it is to graft a standalone module to it.
Otherwise, surely you can find a dead later type PT to scavenge one off, or even replace the whole engine with another one?
