Well I took it off. It's held on by a circlip and a lot of black grease!!
I've bolted the blade carrier back onto it and have stored them as a unit.
It looks like the shaft is pressed in and can't be taken off the base.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!
