I'm trying to fix a Victa Tornado. It would start but over-rev so I presumed an air leak. I replaced the o-rings in the pull starter, the intake and carburetor mount. Now it will start first pull but still revs too high (maybe a little less than before) but I don' have any throttle control. The cable is seated correctly and moves properly when the control is moved. Any ideas where to look next?
The other thing is the muffler is too loud. There is no gasket fitted between the exhaust and the muffler. Should there be one?
Thanks for any interest in helping.

Hi Sparker I have never really discovered the reason they work like that, pretty much just design issues, I don't even bother starting them without putting one of my modified carbys on and then they work fine with full throttle control. It is quite a bit of work but it means you can run these Victas for many years to come and not have it over-rev and you can set it to idle at a nice tickover which is probably how they should have been. They fitted an idle adjust on the G4's but it was dropped when they went to the LM's. As for the myths about air leaks causing the problem that is what it is, a myth. I have never bought a new "O" ring for the manifold and have probably only swapped a couple that had been damaged with second hand "O" rings from other motors. I have no idea how many of these Victas I have put back into service, and very few ever come back with a problem and most of the problem ones were before I was able to get the new type float needles I have also fitted LM carbs to a number of the Victa 24 slashers replacing the old G3 carbs and they are all working exceptionally well with no problems whatever. At first I was pulling the old barrel and fitting the G4 type barrels but I have fitted a number of LM's to the spigot type barrel and they are working fine.

Thanks Norm. I have seen you mention the mod on some other threads but I don't know what it is. Is it documented somewhere? As for the muffler someone has suggested it just needs re-packing with steel mesh/wire.

That's great! You went to a lot of trouble there Norm and I am very grateful. I am definitely going to give this a go.

Thanks Norm, I've started the modification and have finished the cam but I am a bit stuck on what you did to the cap. You soldered the washers together and then drilled them out to 6mm. Is that correct. How are they fixed to the inside of the cap?

Hi Sparker the washers go under the cam, to lift it higher to close the poppet off. On the inside of the cap I put a 6mm nut so that can be used as the idle adjustment.Where the old stop pins/rubber boot fit I tap that to 6mm on an angle so the cam can come around as far as it can (this is where the cam stop ramp is) Originally I just tapped it square but it prevented the cam coming around far enough and I had to grind a bit off the ramp. What the aim of this is, is to allow the lifter to sit on the highest point without moving down on the back of the cam. If only Victa had not put that stupid hump in the cam none of this would be a problem

I am having the same issue at present with a Victa Mayfair Deluxe I bought off gumtree. The previous owner said it was running in the past but had stopped. I found it had plenty of spark. So I cleaned the plug and got fuel going through the tickler. After a few false starts I got it to run. Sometimes it will idle back, but most times it just takes off like a jet and keeps over-revving even when the control lever is pushed to "Slow" position. If you take it down any further it just stops.
Is this the same problem? I am completely new to Victa.
Also can anyone please tell me, what is the correct spark plug for the Victa Mayfair, and what is the correct gap for plug and points? I am using a 25:1 fuel/oil ratio plus a bit extra oil to accommodate for the age and wear. The engine does not smoke at all, which I take as a good sign(?). I recall a relative had one of these and it smoked worse than an old steam train. After mowing the lawn your clothes smelled like you had just been fighting a bushfire.

VM, I think the Mayfair probably is fitted with the G3 carb so it is a completely different set up and as they are getting hard to get parts for I don't play with them.

Thanks Norm, I did figure something out this morning, which may help to diagnose the problem. It seems to be getting too much air. If I put my hand over the end of the tube it starts first time, then if I gradually open my fingers a bit I can get it to idle on "Slow" position. It will still rev up normally if I pull the lever up while holding my hand over the snorkel in this choked manner. I can do the same by squeezing the rubber hose. Sounds funny, but if I clamp the hose until it is nearly closed, it runs fine.

VM, that is not uncommon and as I said parts for these carbys are just about impossible. Have you checked the that the decomp valve hose is connected to the inlet manifold and to the decomp, it will suck air in through there. As I said I don't bother with them any more I just fit a modified LM to them and that solves all my problems, but I am not "restoring" these mowers I'm putting them back to work so function is more important to me than "that's not the correct carby on it"

G'day vint_mow, I am having the same issue at present with a Victa Mayfair Deluxe I bought off gumtree. If it has the G3 carby, I'd check that the governor gears are OK. Pull off the cowlings, and check that the plastic flag will rotate back and forth about 30. If it will move further, the gears are stripped and must be replaced. 25:1 will be just fine, with modern 2-stroke oils. Plug gap is 0.025"; points gap is 0.020" if the coil is under the flywheel, 0.027" if the coil is external. There are a couple of possibilities for the spark plug type; we really need some pics to determine the exact model you have. Might be best to start a new thread!
Cheers, Gadge

Thanks Gadge. Great advice! Sorry for hijacking someone else's thread. If I have any more problems I will start a new thread.
