What do they give you for an average alloy mower frame? How do they profit if they hand you money? They must give a small fraction of what the metal is really worth. I was told my local scrap metal joint will only take non ferrous metal. Sound like a mean dealer to me.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Metal is of little value these days just ask Twiggy Forest, the only good thing about dumping this stuff is it is free for me to dump. About 3 years ago a mate of mine was shutting down his old Triumph bike shop and moving up the bush. He had a lot of stuff to get rid of and we loaded it into my trailer and took it around the scrap yard. The look on his face I will never forget when he got back in the car and told me they wouldnt give him anything for it because it was under half a ton. I don't think he has recovered from that to this day and I never mention it to him anymore. I thought it was funny but somehow I don't think he sees the funny side of it.

Yes they give a fraction of the metal worth but got to understand there is lot things that must go on to become a salable product again.

They buy the metals, sort them, then sell the sorted metals to a recycling center which in turn sends them to smelter to become clean new metal products. Or at least that how it works here. I actually made a good living doing until everyone else got involved and was too lazy to sort the metal to get the best prices or getting into fist fights over a small pile of scrape.

I still save my metals, sort, and sell them just not at the volume I once did. I even reuse items like angle iron in my repairs so I don't need to buy a new piece of every time I to do a repair. It just like saving the good screws. Got to use good common sense as to what needs to be recycle and what can be reused.

Discussing this last night at the pub, the next big issue that is coming is what to do with electric car batteries, apparently they have no idea what to do with them and they are quite large, pretty much the entire floor pan of the car. Recycling them is going to become a huge issue. Producing and then recycling them will probably create 10 times the amount of pollution that the old Holden V8 created in its lifetime. The world is heading to a much darker place in the future

I recently took an alloy frame with 4 stroke in just to dump, but the guy said, you'll get something for this....
$5
So that was OK.

The mower conked out and I found that the repair I did on the magneto had failed. I replaced the entire unit and it is back to running fine.

I have some magneto's that have had their high tension leads cut (probably from forcing the cowl over them in an incorrect position). I just work the broken lead out and replace it by pushing and glueing another HT lead from a known bad magneto.I can see the connection pin in the magneto and I have to take care to line up the HT lead with that pin. In this case all the vibration made it come out as the glue hadn't set properly.

Maybe I should start a new thread but is there a better way of doing this?

How about stripping the broken HT lead at the end, expose the copper, then solder a replacement HT lead to it. After that use hot melt glue and insulating tape around the join to finish it off?
