I spotted this Supa Swift 767 out the side of my eye in Wamberal on the Central Coast.
When I got out for a closer look, the front skirt of the deck is chipped away ( but very neatly :D) and the oil level barely registered on the the dipstick. It turns over and it's a nice old school side start B&S which I haven't come across in a long time, so *sigh* I piled it into the car and took it in the hope I will be able to repower my Suzuki 2 stroke Rover which I can't get going at the moment.
Hope the shaft length is suitable.

Apart from the chipped front, the deck on this is pretty good. The axles are nice and tight. No catcher though. [Linked Image]

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

I haven't played with my Suzuki 2 stroke for quite a while because the only way I can start it is with a whiff of starter fluid and then it is fine. I have cleaned the carb and done all the usual things. Good motor just difficult to start

They have no decompression valve like a Victa ( mine doesn't seem to) so it is tougher to pull. A bit crude IMO. Mine won't so much as as utter a pop and it has spark. Maybe spark died under compression. In any case, I am happy to swap it for an amusing old B&S.

They are probably the best of the B&S motors, keep the oil up to them and they will chug on for years

The previous owner doesn't seem to have going by the dipstick. Hopefully not too late.

The Briggs engines of this era used a different 'compression lowering' strategy. Which they no longer produce documentation of; but I have a 1981 print copy of their Repair Manual...

Quote
The intake lobe on the camshaft is ground with a small ramp which holds the intake valve open 1/100 of an inch for a tiny fraction of the compression stroke. At slow starting speed the interval of time that the valve is open is relatively long and therefore enough air escapes to noticeably reduce the compression. However, at operating speeds the interval of time is so short that there is practically no escape and therefore horsepower is unimpaired. Actually at 3600rpm the valve is opened for a mere 1/200 of a second. In all other respects the valves operate as in any other four stroke cycle engine.

The force required to start an engine is reduced by 50% with 'Easy Spin' and would be noticed most by a person who has difficulty starting the ordinary engine.

Briggs went away from Easy Spin due to its making hot starts, particularly after the engine has been stalled, more difficult.

Cheers,
Gadge

I checked to see if it was in working order yesterday. Has spark and will only start briefly with a shot of ether. Sounded normal with puffs of white smoke out the exhaust.
Tell me, should this butterfly valve remain shut in all throttle positions when it isn't running?

Yes. That is the choke butterfly, and it is opened by intake vacuum acting on a section of the diaphragm, via a wire link.
