SENIOR TECHNICIAN
I have a Victa Commando 2 stroke mower that I found, sitting on the back burner for a while, that I finally got around to looking at today, only to find it seized up.
I opened the top of the crank case and there was some water on the bottom.
I wanted to undo the pin holding the rod to see if it is the piston or bearings causing the seize, but haven't got the special tool required to undo it.
I will try and make a tool out of metal tubing.
Mean time I have sprayed penetrant where I can and will try and spin it tomorrow.
I have a feeling someone has run it on straight fuel because I saw some fine metal shavings when I cleaned the crankcase out with a rag.
I will have to try and inspect the bore and piston for damage if I can get out to move out.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You don't need a special tool to loosen the con rod pin, remove your spark plug and feed some rope down the bore. I use old Telecom rope it works great, move the piston to a good spot and just use a hammer and punch to knock the pin around until loose. Same to tighten it back up. The rope stops your piston moving up the bore.

If you have no rope remove the head and stuff the bore full of rag and refit the head, easy.

Some water may have settled in your bottom bearing, there not hard to know the crank out of.

G'day folks,
We have a good how-to on DIY PowerTorque special tools here; https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/33821/all/Victa_special_tools.html

I would add the comment, that quality sockets will not be case-hardened, but fully hardened and tempered Cr-Mo [Chromium-Molybdenum] AISI 41xx series alloy steel.

So long as they don't get hot enough from grinding to reach the Curie point [which is where a magnet will no longer stick to the socket], their heat treatment won't be affected significantly.
Not that re-heat treating is at all difficult for these steels, in any case.
Edit: FWIW, that's a simple heat to Curie point or dull red, oil quench to harden, temper by colour procedure.

That was a helpful link Gadge, thanks.
Handy hints there Paul_c thank you.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!
