Hello ODK History Lovers
In general research, I discovered a British reel lawnmower that was advertised here
in 1948 and 1949. The Clifton was a 22" reel/roller mower imported here from about 1948.
Little is known about them ...

I have made inquiries to the great Old Lawnmower Club, but with no success so far ...

The machine, at 22-inch cut, was no residential or domestic lawnmower. It had a high
specification, and was a true dual drive machine. It was powered by a J.A.P. 4-stroke
engine. A typical ad is shown below:-

PART TWO - Commentary
Of the dozen or so advertisements I have all come from one Australian company:
the Gippsland and Northern Co-Op. Company Limited of 623 Collins Street, Melbourne.

Two points should be made about this: the first is that they were probably sole
importers of the Clifton. The second point is that the company was primarily an
agricultural supply company - selling milkers and cream separators, Bamford engines,
hay mowers and rakes, Twin City tractors, etc. This photo image of their premises
is c1940s ...

No Clifton lawnmowers have been found or collected by Australian collectors.
This does suggest that sales here were low. It may be that the G&N Co-op lacked
experience in the horticultural market. Who knows?

PART THREE - A Single Clue
There is little evidence to go on about the Clifton.
I have one piece of evidence (apart from the product ads), from a late 1954
Melbourne Age classified advertisement: -

It says that the Clifton was a 'Glasgow-made Motor Lawn Mower' ...
That's all I have.

I wonder what the Clifton story is?
Any information welcome...
