Hello, me again.

picked up these 2 VICTAS recently.

the White one has a B&S 4stroke Engine, though searching the B&S website for details, couldn't find anything from the model number..

The blue one, a VICTA TIGER V40 is a 2 stroke w/catcher. Engine number unknown, might have to remove the cowl, will do that when I get a chance.

When I get them running and looking tidy, what sort of price can I expect to get for them ?

Stick them on EBay for 99c and see. Potential buyers might be attracted by your location for pick up.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Hey Mowerfreak, no eBay seller account for me smirk. Was just curious what these sort of 'older' machines might sell for.. as far as i know, they're nothing special compared to standard 2/4 stroke mowers ?

The Tiger looks a little interesting to me. I like the blue base, but it also mentioned something about a microchip on the sticker.. will certainly have to look into that.

Oh wow, you're a wizard!, thanks Gadge, very much appreciated smile cheers2

The microchip ignition refers to the fact that it has no points and an electronic ignition module (located under the carby and riveted to the engine block)..
As for the 4 stroke, at a guess, it could be either a Clubsman or a Hurricane

It appears that the final full cranks have this chip. Is it like a car engine computer or is it a lot more rudimentary than that?

Well Mowerfreak,
It's a lot simpler than a car ECU, as it operates from a single input, which both powers the module and controls the spark timing. Car ECU's operate from numerous sensor inputs; manifold air pressure, crank angle, engine temperature, engine rpm, Exhaust Gas Oxygen, to name a few.

The first really successful small engine solid-state ignition module was actually an Aussie invention, back in the mid 1970's.
It was first marketed by Atom Industries [still in business today] as a retrofit part, in several versions.
http://www.atomindustries.com/about-us/

You can find some circuit diagrams in the US Patent for it, https://www.google.com/patents/US4163437

And a potted history: http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/aus...amp;Section_id=1020&article_id=10024

Once the patents expired, it became open slather for makers of clone units, so Atom ceased manufacture.

There are still just a few NOS units available ex the USA, though; e.g. http://pickersyard.weebly.com/atom-universal-electronic-ignition-module.html

Cheers,
Gadge

Does the Victor one have a high failure rate? From my observations. No.

The Atom modules were extremely reliable, too.

If a mower that came in to our shop for service needed replacement of both condenser and points, it just got an Atom module, after they became available. That was slightly cheaper for the part/s, and wouldn't need servicing again for the life of the mower, usually. Same with chainsaws and brushcutters; we sold Echos.

Cheers,
Gadge
