I working on a Honda E300 generator and the starter ratchet doesn't engage in order to turn the engine over.

In order to access the starter assembly, the cooling fan has to come off.

Once the 8mm bolt is removed there seems to be another thread on the shaft.

As per the instructions copied below from the workshop manual, are you intended to screw a 14mm bolt into this thread to pull the fan off the shaft? Or is the fan threaded onto the shaft?

Has anyone removed the cooling fan on one of these engines?

See the excerpt from the workshop manual below for more details.

Hi Caled, Honda do some funny things like that, from what it says you have to screw a 14mm bolt into the fan and as you tighten it the fan will come off, hopefully. They use the same principle on some of their motorbike alternator rotors

NormK has it nailed.

Yep, it's just an M14x1.5 thread bolt you need. Any bolt supply place should be able to supply one - I'd ask for a 'socket head cap screw', 25mm or longer. That way you can use an Allen hex key to turn it.

Cheers,
Gadge

Thanks Norm, and thanks Gadge for confirming Norm's response. I'll have a go and then let you know the result.

As Norm and Gadge stated correctly, screwing in a 14mm bolt enabled the fan to pull off the crankshaft. [Linked Image]

Well made aren't they, This method or removal will always trip you up the first time you look at it, the thread inside the flywheel gives the impression it is screwed on, but once you understand it you realize it is a fantastic idea
