Gidday,

I have a used Victa Tornado that has a Briggs & Straton motor (ie. Quantam XTE 50). The registration plate near the motor has 12F 802-2003-001 detailed on it. I bought it a number of years ago.

The motor is in really good condition but the chasis has rust and I am looking for a replacment so I was wondering what type of chasis should I be looking for (ie. eg similiar models that might be suitable) and where I might be able to buy one.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,

The Colonel

I just had a read of some product reviews on the Tornado, obviously a junker, a lot of unhappy customers because the bases rusted out very quickly

I'm not sure but does the Tornado use the longer shaft, if it does apr,I'm sorry I threw one of those bases out last week. Colonel, where in Melb are you, more than one way to skin a cat

Rover also use the Quantum 5HP so I think there are probably a lot of the alloy base Rovers that would probably be suitable. Too bad you are so far away because I have a few Rover and Victa alloy bases you could choose from.

To follow on from NormK, most 4-stroke Victas use a 'short PTO shaft' engine, to match the PowerTorque and earlier 2-stroke engines.

So basically, if the chassis was offered with the PowerTorque engine option, it will have the short PTO engine.
Which will only fit another similar Victa chassis, and won't work with other makes - won't cut low, and the blades may strike the inside.

Looks like the Tornado series is one of these.

Cheers,
Gadge

Hi Colonel, sorry, bit of a bumber, I'm Hampton Park, directly opposite side of Melb. Looks like you motor should fit any of the alloy Rover bases which usually have good wheels and shot motors, so should be an easy swap over

Through experience the Victa's version of the Briggs engine has a shorter shaft than a Rover,Masport etc.So you will need a Victa base.Trust me I've been trying this out myself and it hasn't been working. If you want a base that is going to last then use a Victa alloy base.If your going to use the same blade disc and blades you will be looking for a 19 inch cut base.Perhaps something like a Razor base.
Something like this.Maybe.

The Tornado is 19", so a 19" base would be best. The commando base is only 18". As Blumbly said a Razor base is a good option, being alloy no problems with rust. Also the alloy Mustang base is good too, this is the newer version of the Razor base.

Gidday,

Thanks for the reply.

Would it be easier for me just to find another second hand Victa Tornado ? Would it matter the year is was built as wouldnt they all be the same size 18".

As from memory I bought mine back in 2003 ?

Cheers.

Hi Guys,

Blumbly is spot on. Victa's 19 Inch Engine models do not fit on Rovers and Masports correctly due to an incorrect shaft length. That's not to say you couldn't modify them but I prefer to keep things as they were originally designed to operate.

So yes your best option is to find another 19 Inch Victa Base.

Only problem is those bases suffer from rust so the chances of finding a good one is probably a long shot. I have also found those bases fracture around the bolt holes

Someone should torpedo the tornado wink.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

apr it is completely up to you what you do,but just one thing I'd like you to keep in mind. If it's a 2003 model engine then it is now 14 years old and those engines only have an aluminum sleeve in them.So how much longer will you get out of it.I just recently had a Quantum the same age that had been serviced most of it's life and I took very good care of but it just wore out and the aluminum sleeve just wore down to far,it just wasn't worth fixing it.
So just keep that in mind.I'd hate to hear you went to the trouble of re-basing it to just have the engine wear out on you.
