Good morning,
I am totally new to this site and noticed that there might be a few pro's when it comes to Scott Bonnar mowers out there! I have been give an opportunity to restore a mower that I know nothing about, the lady wants $250 for it and firstly i don't know what they are worth.
I cant seem to find my model Mower number 00316 & Model 650257 on the net for a user/tech manual either, it has a 20" reel installed with a 5.5HP Briggs motor.
I live in Geelong & really need some advise on where to take the reel to be sharpened etc...
Can you please help me??
Shaun Adams

What this mower is is a Model 65 which was the replacement for the Supercut. The 65 is basically a semi Greens mower and not really a domestic unit. I guess it all depends on how serious you are going to be about your lawn and remember it's not the mower itself that turns grass into lawn. It's all the base work and prep involved, the mower just gives it the finish that you are looking for. A model 65 can be worth anything from $50 right through to around $1000. It all depends on the condition of the machine both mechanically and cosmetically. Has it had a hard life or a cushy one. How wide it is ? and whether it is petrol or electric powered. Most of them are petrol powered machines.
A couple of good photos or a link to the listing would be able to give me a far better ability to give you an opinion.
Cheers, BB.

Hello Shaun and Mod BB
The Model 65 is a curious beast, and, like Facebook folk, it may present multiple identities. The particular specification should tell the story - as the Model 65 is best described as a generic machine suitable for cricket pitches, tennis courts, and larger lawns. It was less intended as a greens mower, somewhat in the vain of the Model 43.
As BB said, it was a replacement for the Supercut ... but the Supercut certainly had multiple identities too - depending on the particular specification.
As BB said, a couple of good photos would be helpful. I would be curious to know how many blades are on the reel your machine has. This should reveal its intended purpose, and how you should proceed.
These are quality, heavy duty mowers with dual cone clutches. They have not been well documented, so you are helping us understand this machine.
Many thanks. ------------------------ Jack

It would be a good buy especially if the reel has a few extra blades. Tony at moolap mowers and chainsaws has a machine to sharpen blades. Tony is a genuine small engine mechanic and knows his stuff. I wouldn't go to the local mower stores as they will just outsource the reel sharpening. There is a mower repair shop in grayling st Belmont who might be worth a visit. If you speak to Alan at waurn ponds Bunnings store, he knows of a chap who sharpens reels. Alan is an older chap who you can usually find in the mower section at Bunnings.

The bloke in Grayling street won't have a machine to sharpen the reels. I have however found him to be really helpful and great prices. He seems to able to get in most things. He calls himself Belmont mower and chainsaw repairs.

Ok. Looks like the grayling mower repair shop is not worth a visit. I think your best shot is via Alan at waurn ponds Bunnings store. I think the chap he knows works at barwon heads golf course as a grounds man. But really you need to make a decision about whether to buy the mower. It's a good mower and the price is reasonable. Remember this is victoria and geelong. There isn't a big market for roller mowers. If it was perth, the mower would command upwards of $500.

I'm starting to wonder if this thread is for real or merely a fishing expedition for a garage sale find ?

G'day Mod BB and Members
Well spotted BB. Let's give it 7 days and then I will delete the topic if there is no response from Shaun.
I will add, some posters are just shy. Perhaps Shaun has a genuine and generous interest here.

For what it's worth my father in law is one of the groundsmen at the cement bowls club on McCurdy road and said they sharpen their own so anyone local may be able to get it done on the cheap that way? I suspect with his absence Shaun probably isn't coming back any time soon.

Hello ShaunMany thanks for replying. The reel will need to be sharpened with the bottom block. It is likely the bottom blade will need replacing too, at this time. We really need a photo for more advice. Information on uploading images can be found HERE. There are no tech manuals. We do not have a user manual for the Model 65 (alas)... I hope you do proceed with restoration; as these are great Heavy duty machines. I hope you have the lawn to use this machine? What are you intentions? Is this a keeper - or are you out to sell? I hope members can help in your project. Many thanks for the reply.----------------------------------- Jack
